Job Description:
Job Purpose
The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities. We maintain 2,000 miles of historic canals, rivers, docks, and reservoirs, along with museums, archives, and the country’s third-largest collection of protected historic buildings – preserving them for future generations. Our waterways are vibrant places to work.
There are numerous mechanically and electrically operated pumps, bridges, and locks on our waterways, combining modern technology with historic structures to ensure longevity. These include pumps for water movement, hydraulic systems for bridge/lock operation, and mechanical/electrical actuators for sluices, bridges, and locks.
As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician, you will use your technical expertise to maintain and repair M&E structures, plant, and equipment, safeguarding the network’s reputation as a valued national asset and providing excellent customer service.
Our Gloucester and South West maintenance team seeks a qualified M&E engineer to assist with maintenance activities related to electrical and mechanical assets, especially hydraulics. The role involves isolating power supplies/control panels, fault finding within 400V/240V/24V systems, and fixing potential issues. Many technicians work alone, so you must be qualified to perform these tasks legally.
Applicants should be familiar with mechanical and electrical isolation methods for safe work and capable of fault finding independently. Training and support for continued development will be provided, including CTOP.
Location & coverage
Reporting to Gloucester or Worcester, this role involves regular travel along the regional canal network, with occasional work in other areas of Wales & Southwest. Residing near these areas is essential.

* Deliver customer service by operating assets safely and responding to inquiries.
* Display Trust values and behaviors.
About you
The role requires experience as an Electrical Engineer with mechanical knowledge, ideally from water industry, factory, or manufacturing backgrounds involving wiring systems at 400/230/24 volts. You should be adept at fault finding and fixing issues, ensuring compliance and operational integrity.
