Technical Scientific Officer
Location: Barnet | Employment type: Permanent | Salary: £39,276 per annum
Responsibilities
* Provide technical professional services to protect the health, safety and welfare of residents, businesses, visitors and employees in Barnet.
* Work with businesses to help them comply with their legal duties.
* Provide assistance, advice and use available statutory powers to carry out inspections and keep people safe while maintaining professional and legal standards.
* Deliver high‑quality services ensuring the Council discharges its statutory obligations.
Qualifications
* Successful completion (or imminent completion) of an Environmental Health or Science degree, or a science postgraduate MSc course.
* or demonstrable professional experience in the relevant specialism and a degree or vocational qualification related to pollution control.
* Fully qualified EHORB registered and eligible for Corporate Membership of the CIEH (EHO).
* Knowledge of the team‑specific relevant laws, powers, codes of practice, guidance and policies.
Skills & Experience
* Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills; able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with a wide range of contacts and to deal with simple issues.
* Ability to accurately draft legal documents.
* Competent user of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
* Ability to accurately record data using specialist data management systems.
* Self‑motivated and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines and targets whilst producing work to a high standard.
* Ability to meet the travel requirements of the post (essential).
* Desirable – driving licence.
* Adaptable with a flexible attitude and able to adjust to change in tasks at short notice.
* Ability to progress sometimes complex cases in a timely manner accurately and in accordance with the relevant legislation and guidelines.
