About Tuppenny Barn
Tuppenny Barn is a charitable organization dedicated to educating communities in horticulture and sustainability across West Sussex, Hampshire, and surrounding areas. We are proud to be the only charity within a 50-mile radius offering access to both an outdoor classroom and a sustainability-focused education centre. Our 1-hectare smallholding includes over 40 growing beds, 122 fruit trees, 2 polytunnels, a soft fruit cage, 5 beehives, a wildlife pond, and our eco-designed education centre.
Position Overview
We are seeking a forward-thinking, creative, and highly organised individual with a passion for ethical retail and sustainability to manage the Tuppenny Barn shop. This part-time role offers the chance to work in a unique retail environment that provides locally grown organic produce, plants, flowers, and products from local businesses.
The shop, currently operating in a pop-up format within our education centre, has been running for over 15 years. As we work toward establishing a permanent shop and café building, there is potential for future expansion of this role, subject to funding and role development.
The Shop Manager will work closely with a volunteer and the Centre Manager to grow the shop's presence and support the broader mission of Tuppenny Barn.
Key Responsibilities
* Set up and manage the Tuppenny Barn shop
* Supervise and support shop volunteers
* Oversee daily sales and reconcile takings
* Order new stock and liaise with external suppliers
* Identify and propose ethical and sustainable new products
* Ensure effective in-shop marketing and signage
* Encourage and inform new customers about Tuppenny Barn’s charitable activities
* Maintain shop cleanliness, including kitchen area, and participate in the weekly cleaning roster
* Act as a key holder and ensure safe opening/closing procedures
* Liaise with the Saturday Shop Co-ordinator and gardening team regarding produce
* Assist with Tuppenny Barn events and promote ticket sales
* Report shortages in supplies or packaging materials
* Provide feedback on sales trends and customer experience to help increase footfall
Essential Skills and Experience
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills
* Excellent numeracy and cash handling skills
* Creativity in shop layout and visual presentation
* Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
* Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
Additional Information
* The role includes occasional Saturday cover
* Participation is expected during key events, including:
* Emsworth Arts Trail (two weekends annually)
* Christmas Market (one Sunday in December)
* Annual Summer Open Day
* May involve occasional support in other charity functions as operationally required
Terms of Employment
* Hours: 13 hours per week
* Thursdays: 7:00am – 4:00pm
* Additional hours by negotiation
* Salary: Dependent on experience, paid monthly in arrears
* Leave: 72.8 hours of paid leave per calendar year (for 13 hours/week)
* Pension: Enrolment in the Nest pension scheme
* Probation: 3-month probationary period
* Vetting: DBS check required due to cash handling responsibilities
