1. To assist with managing the Endoscopy department and staff.
2. To provide a safe environment for patients attending the Endoscopy department.
3. To work with Nurse Manager to monitor budget.
4. Maintain trust and department policies.
5. Adherence to the NMC code of conduct

Main duties of the job

6. Co-ordinate departmental activities and ensure effective staff supervision and assist in the maintenance of a productive working relationship in the Endoscopy Department.
7. Undertake junior staff appraisals reporting to the nurse manager.
8. Utilise effective communication systems to keep staff informed.
9. Communicating with senior managers, site management team, immediate colleagues, ward manager, matron, doctors, patient’s relatives and patients, and other healthcare providers and members of the multidisciplinary team.
10. Work with PALS to ensure that areas of concern are addressed effectively.
11. Be able to work in a multi-professional environment ensuring most effective use of all members of those professional teams.
12. Deal with patient / relative complaints pro-actively to minimise the risk of them becoming formal. Appropriately investigate complaints in a timely manner, and provide responses as required.
13. Ability to communicate with a large amount of people, some with barriers to communication such as deafness, learning disabilities, and potentially vulnerable patients.
14. Ensure effective discharge planning, involving the multidisciplinary team as necessary. Be a pro-active role model in ensuring the patient pathway is optimised and timely discharge is promoted.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

15. Assessment of care needs and development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.
16. Timely multi-tasking and prioritising to meet excessive service demand.
17. Be able to motivate a team by using objectives in line with ward, subspecialty and corporate goals.
18. Provide professional leadership within the ward ensuring that all staff use evidence-based practise and adhere to the NMC code of professional conduct.
19. Be able to demonstrate a high degree of motivation and innovation.
20. Actively audit and pro-actively manage essential care against complaints, improvements, critical incidents and the essence of care benchmarking.
21. Demonstrate a logical, flexible and innovative approach to problem solving.
22. Monitor key performance indicators, identify trends and take action to maintain levels of acceptable performance under the supervision of the ward manager.
23. To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in which he/she works.
24. Ensure newly qualified nurses are provided with a preceptorship period.
25. Prepare and evaluate staffing rosters in conjunction with the ward manager, adjust accordingly to provide 24-hour cover with the required skill mix making best use of resources available. Minimise the use for bank and agency staff by relocation of staff as needed to cover rota effectively.
26. Provide and receive highly complex, highly sensitive or highly contentious information, where developed persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathetic or re-assurance skills are required. This may be because agreement or co-operation is required or because there are barriers to understanding.
27. Assess current and future manpower needs including a continual review of skill mix in conjunction with the ward Manager / charge nurse, Clinical Lead Nurses and Heads of Nursing.
28. Report / action any accidents, incidents or undue occurrences reported to you or witnessed by you in line with Trust policy. Ensure proactive investigation of any clinical incidents, undertaking root cause analysis if indicated by the ward manager ensuring action plans are developed as needed.
29. To promote the principles of Improving Working Lives amongst your team ensuring fairness and equity.
30. To have part responsibility for risk management and health and safety in the workplace, by being proactive in raising risks with divisional management team and ensuring adequate controls are in place to manage these risks.
31. Assist the ward manager in ensuring the staff sickness is managed proactively within Trust policy.
32. Ensure that Infection control audits such as high impact interventions and hand hygiene audits are undertaken as required, and any issues or trends in poor compliance are addressed.
Strive to continually improve ward environment to high standards ensuring action plans from Patient environment audits are maintained.
33. Support and promote the development and implementation of nursing care services that reflect the principles of Clinical Governance.
34. Ensure that patient activity is monitored and that all patient information is entered into the Sema Helix system.
35. In conjunction with the ward manager ensure the principles of lean working/ productive ward are embedded into the ward culture and reflected in practice, to ensure most appropriate use of resources both staff and consumables and raise standards of care.
36. Work with the clinical site manager to ensure the most effective use of beds, being a proactive role model in leading the nursing team in ensuring patient pathways / flow are optimised, and that timely discharge is maintained.
37. Display strong leadership and act positivity to the ward team during times of increased pressure on ward resources, staffing crises, or bed pressures, working with divisional leads to assess risks across the division and how these can be minimised.
38. In conjunction with the Ward sister /charge nurse develop policies, protocols and procedures necessary to support practice.
In conjunction with the Ward Sister /charge nurse take an active role in the management of issues and concerns raised within the clinical area by patients or their carers/relatives.
39. To undertake any other duties at the request of the line manager which are commensurate with the role, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover.
