The Opportunity

The University of Edinburgh is a world-class organisation, with the University of Edinburgh Genetics Core provides cutting-edge genomics analysis to support research. As a Senior Research technician, embedded within the Genetics Core, you will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the SequenceME project.

This innovative project will investigate the genomics of ME/CFS, which is a severe, multi-system disease affecting approximately 400,000 people in the UK. It builds on the DecodeME project – the world’s largest ME/CFS genetic study, analysing 15,000+ cases of European genetic ancestry which identified eight genomic regions robustly associated with disease risk, implicating immune and neurological pathways.

SequenceME will whole genome sequence DNA from 6,000 DecodeME participants, using Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing platforms, to identify causal genes and pathways that were invisible to previous technologies.

The project is an existing partnership between: Action for ME, the University of Edinburgh, Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute.

Applicants are expected to have acquired the essential skills, knowledge, experience and abilities required of the post and as outlined in the person specification. You will have obtained a Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification and will have work experience in relevant technical and clinical governance roles. Applicants must demonstrate extensive knowledge of genomic analysis techniques. Previous experience and knowledge of DNA sequencing using Next-Generation analysis platforms, particularly ONT, is desirable.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week) and presents a good internal secondment opportunity.
