Deputy Director of Digital Programmes


The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales, making operational decisions fairly and objectively. It sits at the heart of the criminal justice system, working with partners to help keep the public safe. The CPS is a National Organisation made up of over 7,000 people across England and Wales. Almost half of our employees are lawyers, responsible for deciding whether to prosecute cases, and who represent the Crown in many hearings in the courts. The CPS faces many challenges. most of which require joint working across the criminal justice system and with a complex and often high-profile range of stakeholders.

About the Digital Information Directorate


The Digital Information Directorate is made up of approximately 300 members of staff and has an overall budget of approximately £85 million. The goal of this directorate is to ensure that the infrastructure and systems that CPS relies on to function, are maintained and kept in a condition conducive to a successful working environment. Additionally, it is the driving force for digital transformation throughout the CPS, ensuring that the organisation is well positioned to harness new technologies to their greatest extent, resulting in the best service offering possible for the end user.



About the Role


We are seeking an exceptional leader to direct one of the largest and most critical technology programmes in our history, helping us to achieve our vision of enhanced technology and digital capabilities that focus on user experience, enable innovation, and support justice for all. As our Deputy Director for Digital Programmes, you will primarily lead our multi-year programme to transform our case management system, a critical platform of national importance that underpins the entire criminal justice system. You will be accountable for delivering outcomes that align with organisational priorities, establishing robust governance, and managing performance, risks, and dependencies of this major programme of works. As an established leader working with our highly capable CDIO, you will have ownership over the design of the entire programme, pen delivery objectives, drive team performance, and ensure the organisation’s readiness for change through effective leadership, stakeholder engagement, and effective supplier management.

The successful candidate will have-


* A proven track-record of leading complex, multi-year, high value major programmes from scratch through the full lifecycle, in environments with legacy technology and critical operational systems.
* Experience of driving digital and technology-enabled change in large organisations, including transitioning from legacy technology systems to modern, user-centred systems.
* A strong ability to influence and collaborate with complex and diverse stakeholder groups to build trust and confidence and deliver programme outcomes.
* Ensure stakeholder interests are identified and addressed. Segment and manage multiple stakeholder groups appropriately in complex environments. Build consensus across a large and often diverse group of stakeholders and develop strategic relationships with internal and external suppliers. Work closely with the SRO to co-manage senior stakeholders.
* Significant experience on managing major contracts and supplier relationships including system integrators and delivery partners ensuring value for money, strong governance and alignment with organisational and best practice technology standards.
* Demonstrable experience of leading and inspiring large, multi-disciplinary teams across DDaT, operational and supplier teams.
* Expertise in managing programme risk, assurance reviews with clear experience at operating with executive teams, boards and committees.
* Accountable for ensuring strategic and operational risks and issues are identified, prioritised, assessed and mitigated. Ensure senior stakeholders are briefed, updated and where appropriate, enrolled in the management and control of key risks. Identify and engage specialists as appropriate.
* Provide profession direction and guidance on development to team and more broadly across department and government.
