Job overview

Following additional investment, we are delighted to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our Medicine for Older People based at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. The post holder will provide a clinical and leadership role in the assessment, treatment and management of older people in addition to contributing to the overall proactive and preventative agenda. The successful candidate will work within our forward thinking and expert multidisciplinary team to provide high quality care and will be expected to constantly seek to improve and develop the service.

The appointee will be expected to bring innovation and vision, to further develop a service fit for the future needs of our local population whilst ensuring that current service provision continues to be high-value and delivered to the highest standard. Frequent review of the service is anticipated to ensure that Trust and departmental strategic priorities are being met.

As a consultant, the successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education. The development of relevant research interests will be encouraged, and opportunities will be enhanced alongside areas of specialist interest.

Main duties of the job

The department is keen to accommodate special interests; we are happy to discuss and consider appropriate changes in the weekly job plan. Especially in the areas of:

·Perioperative medicine(including surgical/ Orthogeriatrics/ ect.)

·Frailty

·Community

·Same day emergency care.

The post-holder will take part in the department’s regular teaching to medical students, junior doctors and other health professionals. He/she will supervise junior staff, as well as other members of the department’s clinical team, and community clinicians.

The post-holder will be required to comply with Trust and GMC standards for appraisal and revalidation, including continuing professional development. The Department of Medical Education funds external study leave up to £800/year. There are numerous internal opportunities to gain CPD.

This is a forward looking post and will evolve. We are expecting the post-holder to take an active part in the development of the role and to help drive geriatric services forward into the next decade.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. MRCP or Equivalent GMC registerable qualifications
2. On the specialist register for Geriatric Medicine/GIM

Desirable criteria

3. CCT in Geriatric Medicine & General internal medicine (GIM) or within six months of achieving CCT at the time of interview

Experience

Essential criteria

4. Computer skills. Ability to use ward processor spread sheet programme and web browser

Desirable criteria

5. Good understanding of the NHS agenda and organisational awareness.

Skills

Essential criteria

6. Good clinical knowledge of medicine in geriatrics to enable the consultant to work independently
7. Teaching and training of Junior staff
8. Understanding the principals of clinical governance aspects Patient Safety and experience. A commitment to continuing education and engagement to the appraisal process.
9. Good personal and interpersonal skills. Self-awareness. Ability to judge conflicting demands by planning efficiently and prioritising.

PPE requirements: Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust requires all colleagues to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with our infection prevention and control procedures.
