Job Summary
This post is for a consultant in General and Upper GI Surgery.
The role is a whole‑time 10 PA permanent contract, offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care across Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants are required to hold Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (UK or equivalent), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or to obtain their entry via CCT or CESR (CP) within six months of the interview date.

Responsibilities
Work within a busy general surgical department, participating in the Whiston site on‑call rota (currently 1 in 9, with prospective cover). Attend a 24‑hour on‑call service for consultants, during which elective activity is cancelled.
Provide elective general and advanced benign upper‑GI services and contribute to the development of new services, including general upper‑GI procedures and advanced laparoscopic procedures such as hiatus hernia repair, laparoscopic anti‑reflux procedures, and laparoscopic hernia repairs. Assist in developing specialist interest in advanced laparoscopic procedures such as laparoscopic bile duct exploration.
Support the department’s expansion plans and contribute towards new service objectives.
Qualifications
* Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at interview.
* UK‑trained applicants must hold a CCT or be within six months of award; non‑UK‑trained applicants must provide evidence of equivalence to UK CCT.
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* FRCS or equivalent surgical qualification.
* MD/PHD/MPhil/ChM or equivalent research qualification.
Knowledge & Skills
* Evidence of academic publications and post‑qualification fellowship.
* Experience in laparoscopic surgery and upper‑GI subspecialty.
* Leadership skills and experience of teaching.
* Audit experience and research experience.
* Understanding of NHS principles.

£109,725 to £145,478 per annum.
