Role Overview
As a Project Engineer, you will play a central role in supporting the delivery of capital and technical projects that underpin our research, innovation initiatives and facility development activities. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Capital Projects to ensure projects are planned, executed and handed over effectively, safely and on time.
This role is suited to a motivated engineer with practical experience in project delivery within a technical, industrial, or research environment. Formal project management qualifications are not essential; however, demonstrable project participation and hands-on experience are required. Familiarity with project management software is desirable but not essential.
Key Responsibilities
* Support planning, coordination and execution of capital and technical projects across the Institute’s research, pilot, and industrial facilities.
* Assist in developing project scopes, schedules, cost estimates and risk assessments.
* Work with internal stakeholders, external suppliers, contractors and technical teams to ensure project objectives are met.
* Monitor project progress, identify issues and support corrective actions to maintain delivery against plans.
* Prepare and maintain documentation including project plans, status reports, technical specifications and handover packs.
* Undertake site inspections, surveys and technical verification as required.
* Ensure compliance with health, safety and quality standards throughout project lifecycles.
* Provide technical support and troubleshooting during installation, commissioning and handover phases.
* Support continuous improvement of project delivery processes and standards.
* Be prepared to contribute hands-on when required, including practical engineering tasks or site-based work.
Person Specification
Essential
* Engineering qualification (HNC, HND, BEng/BSc or equivalent) or equivalent practical experience in engineering/project delivery.
* Practical experience contributing to engineering or capital projects in industrial, research or technical environments.
* Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
* Good communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
* Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications and engineering documentation.
* Commitment to health, safety and environmental compliance.
Desirable
* Experience with project management software (e.g., Microsoft Project, Primavera, Asana, Smartsheet).
* Familiarity with project control tools for scheduling, budgeting and reporting.
* Knowledge of engineering standards and regulatory frameworks relevant to research/industrial facilities.
