About the role
Barnsley Libraries serve as community and digital hubs which anchor the council’s presence in across the borough, developing a vibrant events and activities programme to attract and engage residents and visitors. Barnsley Libraries are regionally and nationally recognised through its National Portfolio status, awarded by Arts Council England from April 2023 being only 1 of 16 libraries to be awarded this in the country. In the past two years we have delivered new and innovative cultural experiences such as Barnsley Book Festival and Library Lates comprising craft workshops, author talks and live performances as well as a range of bespoke artist commissions.
Key responsibilities
* Assist library customers with book selections, digital resources, and technology assistance.
* Run interactive programmes such as craft workshops, author talks, story and rhyme sessions, and other cultural activities.
* Deliver customer service appointments for other departments and support service users.
* Collaborate with partners across Public Health, Museums, Schools and community groups to deliver innovative services.
* Provide flexible support across all library sites as required.
Qualifications and requirements
* Strong communication and customer service skills.
* English language proficiency to an appropriate standard.
* Enhanced DBS check (or overseas criminal record check if applicable).
* Ability to work flexibly within a 2‑week rota, including Saturdays and variable hours.
* Valid legal right to work in the UK; visa sponsorship not available.
