About us: At the Department of Physiology Anatomy & Genetics (DPAG) we undertake discovery science where we reassemble physiological processes at the molecular, cellular, tissue and systems level of organisation. In so doing we provide a bridge to translational medicine, and interface between physical and life sciences. Overview of the role: We are seeking a Research Assistant to join the Keeley research group. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and talented pre-doctoral scientist with experience in physiological and molecular techniques, looking to engage in novel and exciting research. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, conducting and analysing experiments on a project investigating the interaction between G-protein signalling and oxygen homeostasis, utilising a combination of in vitro and ex vivo models. This post is available from 01/11/25 and work will primarily be conducted in the NDM Research Building on the Old Road Research Campus. Key responsibilities: Manage own research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by senior colleagues Determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses, and identify suitable alternatives if technical problems arise Management of mammalian cell lines Performing a range of molecular biology assays to analyse protein/mRNA expression and cellular function Gather, analyse, and present scientific data from a variety of sources Contribute to scientific reports and journal articles and the presentation of data/papers at conferences Responsible for general laboratory management and administration, including stock control of laboratory consumables Use specialist scientific equipment in a laboratory environment Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars, either with other members of the group or alone Contribute to discussions and share research findings with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups Selection criteria: Essential selection criteria Hold a first degree in biomedical science (biochemistry, molecular biology, physiology) Experience in standard molecular biology techniques such as immunoblotting, RT-qPCR and immunocyto/histochemistry. Possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research programmes Ability to manage own research and administrative activities Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings Experience of following and adapting protocols and selecting appropriate experimental methodologies Commitment to engaging with, and promoting awareness of, equality, diversity and inclusion and embedding these into your work Desirable selection criteria Experience of working in a research team and contributing ideas for new research projects Experience in hypoxia or mitochondrial biology Experience in mammalian cell culture Experience in Nitric oxide signalling and/or vascular biology.
