Offer description

Post No. POSN005056 - Housing Social Worker - Adults Join us as we create a new Social Worker role at the heart of our homelessness response. Fixed Term or Secondment - 24 months. If you're a qualified social worker who wants to make a real difference to people facing homelessness, and shape a brand new way of working in Newport. This is a rare chance to step into a role that will genuinely change lives. Overview Newport is a diverse and fast growing city, and we're committed to supporting residents through some of the toughest challenges they face. Our teams work closely across housing, health and social care to make sure people receive the right help at the right time. We're looking for a qualified and registered social worker who can bring professional expertise into a fast paced, people focused environment to strengthen prevention, reduce crisis responses, and deliver support that is person centred, compassionate and practical. The Team You'll work day to day with our Housing and Communities teams, including Housing Advice, Prevention, Temporary Accommodation and Housing Support. These teams support individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, often with complex needs. You'll also have professional oversight and supervision from the Adult Mental Health Team, giving you access to specialist support, reflective practice and a strong multi agency network. It's a genuinely collaborative environment where your professional input will be valued from day one. Your New Role This is a new and exciting position. Your focus will be on early social work input, professional advice and problem-solving - not managing a full caseload. As a qualified social worker, you'll play a key role in bringing social work practice into the centre of our homelessness response. You'll help us understand people's needs earlier, strengthen decision making, and support better outcomes across the whole system. You'll carry out holistic assessments, offer specialist advice on risk, safeguarding, mental health and capacity, and work with partners to prevent homelessness wherever possible. You'll also be prepared to support a small caseload where needed, but your main impact will come from your professional judgement, problem solving and the guidance you give to colleagues. This is a role where you can influence how we work, shape a developing service and help us learn from real cases. Key Responsibilities - Provide early social work input and proportionate assessments for people experiencing homelessness - Use professional judgement to guide decisions, manage risk and support prevention - Work collaboratively with housing, social care, health and voluntary partners - Lead or contribute to multi-agency responses, including complex cases and hospital discharge - Advocate for people facing multiple disadvantages and ensure safeguarding responsibilities are met - Maintain accurate records, produce clear reports and share learning to improve practice What We're Looking For - A qualified and registered Social Worker - Experience supporting adults with mental health needs or complex circumstances - Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and community care practice - Someone confident making decisions, communicating clearly and working independently - A collaborative, reflective practitioner who can help shape a developing service - A driving licence for essential home and site visits Any Questions? If you'd like to talk about the role before applying, reach out to Zoe Hodges (Zoe.Hodges@Newport.gov.uk) or Katherine Howells (Katherine.Howells@newport.gov.uk) manager. They'll be happy to discuss what the role looks like day to day and how the secondment would work. You must be registered with the Care Council for Wales This position is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS). We welcome applications for all our jobs in either Welsh or English. An application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English. Newport City Council is committed to working towards its workforce being more representative of the population that we serve and particularly welcomes applications from people from minority ethnic communities represented (or living) in the city. Selection will be made on ability and skills to undertake the role. Newport City Council is not currently supporting applicants with sponsorship for right to work.
