Job summary

Applications for this post are invited from experienced Clinical Technologists with an appetite to address the challenges of service growth and improvement, underpinned by experience in Radiation Protection, Diagnostic Radiology and Quality Assurance. As a member of the Radiology Physics Group the post holder manage the clinical technologist workforce of the Section and be part of Diagnostic Radiology Sub-group enabling delivery of high quality Radiation Protection, Quality Assurance and technical support services to Radiology departments within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and other NHS and commercial organisations within South Yorkshire and beyond.

The focus of this post is to support the delivery of efficient, high-quality Radiation Protection and Quality Assurance across multiple modalities.

We require applicants who can rise to the challenge of managing operational delivery of routine and ad hoc, complex multisite/multi-customer services.


Main duties of the job

* Fulfil the role of Section Lead Technologist for the management, development and operational delivery of all Section Technical Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection Services, including development of new services where required, providing high quality advice and support to service purchasers.
* Manage the day to day delivery of Diagnostic Radiology QA and Radiation Protection Services for the Trust and Service Level Agreement holders regionally.
* Manage technologist staff working within the Section.
* Be formally appointed as Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) under the Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRR2017) for Radiology Physics.
* To support the appointed Radiation Protection Advisers as appropriate in the provision of quality assured radiation protection technical services for ionising radiations across an extensive customer base, to include NHS Trusts, private institutions, educational premises and commercial organisations.
* Take a lead and provide management support to the Section Head for service provision contracts, maintenance of service delivery records, management of purchase orders, invoicing, section procurement of scientific and technical equipment, ensuring equipment calibration and record keeping, provide reports and Key Performance Indicators across the service.
* Manage the Radiology Physics Quality and controlled document systems and accreditation processes.

Person Specification


Education and Qualifications

* HNC or BSc Degree in Physics or a related scientific discipline at 1st, 2:1, 2:2 level or vocational degree (Hons) in clinical technology (physics/engineering) or other relevant qualification or IPEM Diploma in Clinical Technology
* Registered with, or eligible for admission to the Register of Clinical Technologists.
* Post graduate training in scientific and technical aspects of Medical Physics and Medical Imaging including any relevant short courses.


Further Training

* Evidence of working with quality systems and managing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
* Evidence of training in management practices.
* Experience of service improvement and relevant methodologies.
* Experience of research, development and innovation relevant to the services delivered.


Experience

* Diagnostic Radiology Physics, including the direct provision of Clinical Technologist services
* Extensive experience of Diagnostic Radiology QA and radiation protection
* Evidence of highly developed training and practical experience in the use and testing of diagnostic radiology equipment, (including digital mammography, CT scanners, interventional fluoroscopy equipment, DR and CR imaging systems etc.)
* Specialist test and measurement phantoms and dosimetry equipment calibration.
* Experience of unsealed sources radiation protection.
* Evidence of scientific activity and proven ability to work in a medical imaging environment across many sites.
* Knowledge of the application of legislation, standards and guidelines relevant to the practice of Diagnostic Radiology
* An understanding of clinical governance and its relevance to Diagnostic Radiology.
* Extensive experience in Radiology Physics Service delivery and management
* Experience in management of teams
* Experience in staff training and teaching
* Good understanding of patient and staff risks arising from the use of radiation in Diagnostic Radiology.
* Evidence of and proven ability to work in a medical imaging environment across many sites.


Skills and Knowledge

* Able to communicate complex facts and details to a wide range of professional groups both verbally and in writing.
* High standard of numeracy, literacy and technical understanding.


Personal Qualities

* Ability to work effectively within a team atmosphere with an equitable temperament and ability to remain calm and objective under stressful situations
* Evidence of ability to lead and work as a team member as required by the Section Head.
* Current driving licence and access to car for business use
