University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us as a Sleep Medicine Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) within our Tertiary Paediatric Sleep Disorder Service. The children’s sleep disorder service team is committed to delivering a high‑quality, efficient tertiary service for patients from the local, regional and supra‑regional areas. The CNS role is an integral part of the team, integrating all pathways within the service from assessment through to diagnostics and treatment, working alongside nurse ACP trainees, clinicians, physiologists and sleep practitioners.
The service operates Monday – Friday, with the physiology team working once monthly on Saturday.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
* Assess, diagnose and manage neurological, medical and chronic insomnia sleep disorders in typically developing children/young people and those with neurodevelopmental difficulties.
* Take the lead in nursing support of children and young people with hypersomnolence disorders; narcolepsy and Kleine Levin syndrome.
* Support the Band 5 specialist sleep practitioner team and contribute to management of the team.
* Contribute to the training of health care professionals, including national Southampton Sleep Training.
* Act as an educational resource in specialist area of sleep medicine, providing information on the management of sleep disorders for medical, nursing and other professionals across health, social care and educational services.
* Participate and contribute in multidisciplinary team clinical monthly supervision meetings.
* Attend national and international sleep conferences for up‑to‑date training and continual professional development.
The post holder will work to agreed professional, departmental and Trust boundaries as required to provide patient‑centred seamless care.
The successful candidate will hold transferable skills and, along with sleep medicine training that will be provided, will join an enthusiastic multidisciplinary team. Minimum requirements include a minimum of 4 years experience working with children/young people in a specialist nursing area and an excellent understanding of child development and behaviour. Knowledge and experience supporting children/young people with severe learning disabilities, autism and/or behavioural or neurological disorders would be an advantage.

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience – Essential Criteria
* Registered nurse on the relevant part of the NMC register.
* Degree qualification or equivalent 120 credits at Level 6.
* Post‑registration qualification within area of speciality or equivalent experience.
* Completion of all Band 5 (preceptorship) competencies.
* Evidence of supporting/ managing a range of learners in practice.
* Evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice.
* Extensive post‑registration experience within specialist area.
* Knowledge of current issues within the acute health service.
* Understanding of personal accountability.
* Confident in own knowledge base, aware of learning needs and seeks guidance when appropriate.
* Able to critically review and communicate clinical information.
Desirable Criteria
* Registered on MSc Pathway – completion of HTPA Competencies.
* Act as a Practice Assessor or support the progression of learners.
* Counselling qualification.
* Palliative care course.
* IT training.
* Change Management, clinical practice development.
* Multidisciplinary team working.
* Interest in nurse‑led care.
* Organisational/strategic awareness.
* Clear about professional accountability and autonomous practice components of role.
The post is a 0.7 WTE permanent Band 6 position. Driving licence is required. There is an opportunity to work flexibly – specifically one day a week working from home, should you choose. The team is based at Southampton Children’s Hospital.
