Consultant Gastroenterologist

The closing date is 09 February 2026

Are you an enthusiastic and forward‑thinking Gastroenterologist looking to make a real impact? Join us at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust during a transformative and exciting period of growth. With a brand new third endoscopy suite now open and a new hospital on the horizon, this is a unique opportunity to influence how modern gastroenterology services are delivered for years to come. We are seeking dynamic clinicians with strong subspecialty skills to complement our expanding team. You’ll work across outpatients, endoscopy and our dedicated gastroenterology ward, playing a key role in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care. As part of our ten‑year strategy programme you’ll help shape service development and contribute to innovative models of care for our local population.

Main duties of the job

You’ll bring JAG‑accredited competence in upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy, including therapeutic skills, and confidence in managing a wide range of gastroenterology conditions. Your weekly timetable will include participation in a 1:7 GI bleed rota (moving to 24/7), ward cover and flexible clinical sessions across multiple sites. With significant investment in new equipment, additional staffing including a Nurse Endoscopist and future expansion into the Community Diagnostic Centre, you’ll be joining a service that’s truly on the rise. As part of a supportive, inclusive, and forward‑looking Trust you’ll work within multidisciplinary teams, contribute to teaching and supervision, engage in audit and research, and uphold the highest standards of clinical governance. We’re proud to be part of the Neighbourhood Wave programme, working closely with partners to deliver more integrated, preventative, community‑focused care.

About us

The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust (PAHT) is proud to care for the communities of West Essex, delivering safe, compassionate and high‑quality services. We are part of the Neighbourhood Wave, a national programme that changes how care is delivered by focusing on prevention, early support and more joined‑up services across health, social care and the voluntary sector. This means we’re working more closely with local partners to bring care closer to home and support people to live healthier, more independent lives. We are a supportive and inclusive organisation that values its people, offering development opportunities, flexible working and a strong focus on wellbeing. As a Disability Confident and equal opportunities employer we welcome applicants from all backgrounds and experiences.

Job responsibilities

Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual with sub‑specialty skills who will complement those of the existing Gastroenterologists to work alongside us in outpatients, endoscopy and our gastroenterology ward. This is an exciting time to join The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust – we now have a new 3rd endoscopy suite and a new hospital being built. The post holder will have the opportunity to shape and develop the service for the local population and have input into how the service operates out of a brand new facility. The department has recently developed a ten‑year strategy programme which the post holder will help develop and deliver. It is essential that the successful candidate is competent in the effective management of a wide range of gastroenterology conditions within the outpatient setting in order to see, treat and discharge patients in a timely manner.

Main duties of the job

Skills and experience in endoscopy (including therapeutic skills) are essential with JAG‑accredited competence in upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy. The post holder will work flexibly during the week with a pre‑arranged timetable (including a 1:7 weekend GI bleed rota – we will shortly start a 24/7 rota that you will be required to participate in) to accommodate clinics and support the wider service and occasionally backfilling in endoscopy. They will also support a 1:7 week ward cover rota.

There has been a substantial investment programme in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy which includes funding of additional new posts of a Nurse Endoscopist as well as new equipment for the Endoscopy Unit.
