Summary
We are seeking a skilled and experienced C&I Engineer to join our innovative team in the heart of the process industry as a C&I Engineering Manager. This role is pivotal in developing and maintaining smooth running and technical development of our Services team and will play a key role in delivering instrument packages, solutions, site maintenance and calibrations, contributing directly to our mission of delivering exceptional customer service.
Responsibilities
Technical Responsibilities
* Design and Implementation: Oversee the design and integration of control systems (PLC, SCADA, DCS) and instrumentation in new or existing systems.
* Instrumentation Selection: Ensure the correct selection, calibration, and installation of instruments for measuring variables like pressure, flow, temperature, and level.
* System Integrity: Maintain and improve control system reliability, availability, and safety.
* Troubleshooting: Provide high-level support for diagnosing and resolving control and instrumentation faults.
* Compliance: Ensure systems meet relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices (e.g., IEC, ATEX, SIL, etc.).
Leadership & Management
* Team Management: Lead and develop a team of C&I engineers and technicians. Allocate tasks and monitor performance.
* Project Management: Plan and oversee C&I aspects of projects, ensuring delivery on time, within budget, and to specification.
* Budgeting: Manage budgets for C&I projects and maintenance.
* Supplier Coordination: Liaise with external suppliers and contractors for system components, upgrades, or support.
Strategic & Continuous Improvement
* Asset Management: Develop and maintain asset lifecycle plans for company equipment.
* Technology Upgrades: Evaluate and implement new technologies to enhance system performance or efficiency.
* Standardisation: Develop and enforce engineering standards, specifications, and procedures.
* Risk Management: Identify risks related to control systems and put mitigation strategies in place.
Training & Knowledge Sharing
* Mentoring: Train and mentor junior engineers or apprentices.
* Knowledge Transfer: Ensure documentation and technical knowledge is effectively captured and shared.
* Documentation Control: Support the Service Manager and project coordinators in ensuring all documentation is completed for project works and compliance.
Knowledge and Experience (Desirable but not essential)
* Control Systems: Deep understanding of PLCs, SCADA, DCS, and HMI systems (Siemens would be preferred).
* Instrumentation: Knowledge of field instruments (flow, pressure, temperature, level), including selection, calibration, and installation.
* Communication Protocols: Familiarity with industrial networking and fieldbus protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus).
* Electrical & Electronic Principles: Strong grasp of low-voltage systems, signal processing, and circuit design related to instrumentation.
* Functional Safety: Understanding of safety integrity levels (SIL) and ATEX.
Regulatory & Compliance Knowledge
* Knowledge of relevant industry regulations (e.g., ATEX, IECEx for hazardous areas).
* Awareness of standards for design, commissioning, and operation of C&I systems (e.g., ISO, IEC, BS standards).
* Health and safety regulations related to electrical and control systems.
Software & Tools
* PLC programming software (e.g., TIA Portal)
* SCADA/HMI configuration tools
* CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, EPLAN)
* Typically 5+ years of experience in controls and instrumentation engineering.
* Proven project delivery experience – leading C&I scopes from design through to commissioning and handover.
* Hands-on experience with fault finding, commissioning, and maintaining control systems in a live plant or industrial environment.
* Experience working in a regulated industry (e.g., oil & gas, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, utilities, manufacturing) is highly beneficial.
* Experience managing a team of engineers and technicians.
* Ability to plan resources, manage budgets, and deliver to project milestones.
* Experience in mentoring, performance management, and team development.
* Experience with plant or facility upgrades and instrumentation migrations.
* Exposure to root cause analysis (RCA), reliability engineering, and continuous improvement processes.
* Working with multidisciplinary teams (e.g., mechanical, electrical, process engineers).
Qualifications (Desirable but not essential)
* Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control, Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Functional Safety or Hazardous Area Certification (e.g. CompEx)
* Project Management Certification (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP)
