As part of the wider team in general practice, General Practice Assistants (GPA) provide support by carrying out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties.
GPAs are trained to undertake routine administration and basic clinical duties. They help free up GP time and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, enhancing patient experience in the surgery.
Main duties of the job
1. Assisting the urgent care GP during their sessions.
2. Arranging patient appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-up consultations.
3. Completing simple clinical observations/investigations as directed, e.g., dipstick urine, blood pressure, ECG, and phlebotomy.
4. Completing basic (non-opinion) forms.
5. Completing core elements of specific forms for GP approval and signature, e.g., insurance, mortgage, and benefits agency forms.
6. Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
7. Assisting GPs to liaise with outside agencies, e.g., contacting an on-call doctor for advice, arranging patient admission.
8. Sorting, prioritising, and signposting clinical communications and letters (including medication changes where appropriate) for GP and staff.
9. Extracting information from clinical letters for coding and updating patient notes.
10. Supporting QOF reviews such as Long-Term Condition reviews.
11. Supporting surgery Patient Services in managing patient demand and prioritising urgent cases.
12. Supporting database searches, audits, and quality improvement projects.
13. Participating in annual individual performance reviews.
14. Tracking and recording evidence of experience against the national competency framework.
15. Informing the lead Clinical Manager of concerns and requesting professional development as needed.
16. Maintaining awareness of professional boundaries.
