The Role
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design function within the R&D department. The successful candidate will provide mechanical design expertise for the development of cutting-edge sensor technologies and precision-engineered products, ensuring conformance to industry and internal standards throughout the full design lifecycle—from concept through to production release.

Key Responsibilities
Lead and deliver innovative mechanical design solutions for precision sensors and instrumentation.
Design pressure housings, optical assemblies, and encapsulated components suitable for operation in demanding environments.
Develop 3D printed components, bonding definitions, and detailed assembly methods.
Produce Bills of Materials (BOMs), technical drawings, and manufacturing release documentation.
Ensure all mechanical designs meet defined performance and reliability criteria in accordance with Product Requirement Specifications (PRS).
Maintain compliance with BS8888 standards and continuously improve internal design processes.
Manage and develop mechanical design standards across the business.
Provide leadership, mentoring, and technical guidance to a small team of mechanical design engineers.
Candidate Profile
HND or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Minimum of 1 year’s experience in a relevant mechanical design role.
Proficient in 3D CAD design and detailed drafting for manufacture (SolidWorks preferred).
Experience developing and assembling complex mechanical systems, with practical understanding of machining and fitting processes.
Knowledge of materials and manufacturing techniques, including plastics, resins, adhesives, and moulded components.
Experience designing optomechanical systems and encapsulated assemblies.
Proven ability to design for harsh environments (e.g., high-pressure housings up to 600 bar).
Familiarity with shock and vibration testing for ruggedised products.
