Job overview THIS VACANCY IS OPEN TO IOW TRUST STAFF ONLY We are recruiting for a Theatre Practitioner to our multi-disciplinary team who wishes to join TeamIOWNHS. This is an exciting opportunity to work within perioperative care, we are seeking enthusiastic and highly motivated Theatre Nurses and Operating Department Practitioners with suitable knowledge, skills and experience registered with the NMC or HCPC. The role is based within the small and friendly theatre team based at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport You should share our passion and drive to ensure that our patients receive quality and compassionate care and work with us to ensure the Trust continues its journey towards "great people, great place ". Our service consists of 4 Main theatres, 2 Day surgery theatres, 1 Ophthalmology theatre and 1 Maternity theatre. We can provide experience in a number of surgical specialities including: * General Surgery * Breast Surgery * Colorectal Surgery * Gynaecology * Obstetrics * Trauma & Orthopaedics * Urology * Emergency Surgery Due to our unique, collaborative and innovative ways of working you will have opportunity to develop across the different disciplines within perioperative practice to include Post anaesthetic care, Scrub and, (dependant on qualifications) Anaesthetic roles. Advert We are looking for individuals with excellent interpersonal skills who can demonstrate their ability to work closely within the team to ensure a high standard of care is delivered to every patient in our departments. You will be expected to partake in all aspects of the clinical care within the perioperative care pathway and work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering care to patients undergoing both elective and emergency surgery. The role is full time, you will need to have a flexible approach to service provision which will involve evenings, weekends night duty and on-calls. A successful applicant must be adaptable to meet the demands of our busy department and to contribute to our 247/ 365 service. The successful applicant will mainly be based with the Main theatres team, although flexibility across all theatres will be required, and will be rostered to work a mix of duties including weekends, on-call and dependant on experience/role, Nights. Detailed job description and main responsibilities As a Theatre practitioner your role is to ensure the safe passage of every patient through their perioperative journey. · Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individual patient care. · To maintain a safe environment in accordance with the organisational standards. · To provide effective clinical leadership within the Theatre department, acknowledging own limitations, in collaboration with the senior Theatre team. · Maintain the comfort, dignity and privacy of patients at all times. · Demonstrate a broad knowledge of a range of theatre specialities. · Promote a positive learning environment for all team members. · Be responsible in maintaining the cleanliness of the Environment to comply with the standards of the environment audit. PACU/ Recovery practitioner Provide safe, effective post‑anaesthetic care to patients in the recovery area following surgery Continuously assess and monitor airway, breathing, circulation, pain, and level of consciousness Identify and respond to clinical deterioration, escalating concerns appropriately Administer prescribed medications and manage pain, nausea, and other post‑operative needs Accurately document patient observations, care delivered, and clinical decisions Scrub practitioner Prepare and maintain a sterile field in accordance with infection prevention and control standards Anticipate the needs of the surgical team, providing instruments, equipment, and assistance promptly Perform and document surgical counts in line with Trust and national guidelines Ensure correct preparation, handling, and disposal of surgical instruments and materials Support patient safety, dignity, and wellbeing throughout the peri‑operative pathway Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary theatre team to promote efficient patient care Report and escalate concerns related to patient condition, equipment, or procedure Support maternity and outpatient surgical services. Anaesthetic practitioner Deliver safe, high‑quality anaesthetic care to patients throughout the peri‑operative pathway Assist the anaesthetist in the preparation, delivery, and monitoring of anaesthesia Prepare anaesthetic equipment, drugs, and monitoring devices in line with local policy Perform and record clinical observations, recognising and escalating patient deterioration Support airway management and patient positioning before, during, and after anaesthesia Maintain patient safety, dignity, and comfort at all times Accurately document care delivered and contribute to effective handovers Support emergency response teams across the full hospital site.
