Tesco UK • Welwyn Garden City • Hybrid • Full-Time • Apply by 29-May-2025 About the role The transactional APIs are a collection of services that support the retail platform, which powers the shopping for all of the customers in Tesco. They are capable of handling transactions across all of Tesco’s channels and is of central importance to Tesco’s strategic plans to better serve 28 million shoppers each week in the UK, and more around the globe. The impact of the team’s work is visible through Tesco's tills, websites and mobile apps - it is rare to find a job with this level of challenge and impact. CAP theorem is a regular and very practical topic of conversation within the teams. The services are built with Java,, Spring Boot, Micronaut, Couchbase and Kafka, among other technologies. They run on AWS & Azure with fully automated testing in continuous deployment pipelines. The teams work according to Agile principles, adapting Kanban and other techniques as appropriate to succeed. The teams are supportive of each other and highly collaborative both internally and externally, with pairing a common occurrence where all code is reviewed via Github. You will be responsible for
11. Apply your in-depth knowledge of multiple programming languages, associated frameworks, and the tool ecosystem to create elegant solutions to problems.
12. Adopt new languages and new paradigms and produce proof of concepts to evaluate new tools, applying them to the problem domain where they deliver significant benefit.
13. Lead group discussions on design and model multiple domains, articulating contexts and boundaries and the rationale behind them, shaping the wider application landscape.
14. Work with product teams to understand and translate their needs into improvements in your product, translating requirements into tasks and code and developing high-quality code that can lead to rapid delivery.
15. Support production systems, resolving incidents, and performing root cause analysis.
16. Share knowledge with the wider engineering community, mentoring and developing those around you to improve the organisation.
You will need
17. Demonstrated experience designing, developing and running whole system landscapes.
18. Experience across large engineering organisations.
19. Experience acting as a technical authority across multiple domains and multiple technologies. Experience proposing architectural patterns for adoption by an organisation.
20. Experience guiding large programmes of work.
21. Experience driving the adoption of inner sourcing initiatives.
22. A track record of delivering large-scale, well architected web solutions at pace
23. You drive and implement best practice improvements
24. You confidently and competently impart knowledge to users, customers, and other team members
25. Strong understanding of running production applications.
26. Designing and building distributed systems, for scalability, availability and performance
27. Testing everything, automating everything
The relevant skills;
28. A polyglot set of languages, frameworks and technologies on which you can draw from your background of commercial experience with.
29. A high degree of emotional intelligence; you are aware of your own emotions, how you appear and can self-reflect on your actions. You can empathise with others and modify your behaviour and style accordingly.
30. Problem-solving, analysis and computational skills; you are comfortable crafting systems and reasoning about them.
31. When solving problems, you take a detailed and logical approach to solving them and you retain ownership through to resolution.
