Consultant in Stroke and Care of the Elderly

We are excited to share an opportunity to join our elderly care and stroke medicine teams at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT). The elderly care team consists of 10 consultants and the stroke team consists of 5, including this post.
Stroke Responsibilities
* Provide effective and compassionate care for stroke patients across a 48‑bed bed base.
* Develop and lead a specialist area of interest within the stroke service, providing sub‑specialty expertise.
* Expand the current stroke service locally and regionally.
* Collaborate closely as a core member of the West Yorkshire Associate of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) with the tertiary service team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
* Engage in clinical research, teaching, and professional development.
* Provide expert advice and support regarding complex cases to clinical colleagues in primary and secondary care.
Main Duties of the Job
* Assess patients suspected of having an acute stroke when holding the hot phone, including suitability for thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy.
* Run a TIA clinic for stroke prevention.
* Attend daily morning ward rounds on the Hadley Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Ambulatory Stroke Unit (ASU) as part of a 5‑week rotation with the other four consultants.
* Manage ongoing rehabilitation of stroke patients in the stroke rehabilitation ward.
* Follow up on discharged patients from ASU and the stroke rehabilitation ward in a weekly clinic.
* Lead the development of new services across hospital and community settings, including the Virtual Ward and Frailty SDEC.
Qualifications
* MRCP or equivalent.
* Specialist registration for stroke (or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees in a UK training programme). Consideration will be given to applicants with relevant consultant‑level experience or who are within 6 months of attaining specialist registration.
* Registered with the General Medical Council and holding a Licence to Practice.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Enhanced DBS disclosure required.
* For areas requiring EPP clearance, a health screening will also be required.
Experience and Achievements
* High level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of the stroke specialty.
* Significant experience with minor stroke procedures.
* Understanding of current issues within the wider NHS.
* Attendance at a recognised management course.
* Evidence of ability to work with and lead others across professions.
Teaching and Training
* Experience and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non‑medical staff.
* Academic achievements or evidence of research methods leading to publications.
* Training in clinical and educational supervision.
* Attendance at a teaching course.
Audit and Research
* Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects.
* Critical appraisal skills.
* Knowledge of research methodology.
* Good communication and empathy skills with patients.
* Willingness to participate in a multidisciplinary team environment.
* Ability to work as a member of a team, both through communication and sharing workload.
* Ability to manage high‑pressure situations, e.g., clinical crises.
* Ability to prioritise and organise workload, coordinate staff, and integrate patient care across clinicians.
* Willingness to work flexibly to deliver clinically effective and cost‑effective healthcare.
Practical/Intellectual Skills/Personal Qualities
* Evidence of continual learning and development.
* Understanding of self (strengths and weaknesses) and impact of behaviour on others.

General
* Ability to work in various locations throughout the network of services provided by Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.
* For areas requiring EPP clearance (Exposure Prone Procedures), this will also be a requirement of the health screening.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. A submission for Disclosure will be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Salary
£109,725 to £145,478 per annum (dependent on experience).
