Medical Laboratory Assistant / Phlebotomist – Grimsby

An opportunity has arisen within the Pathology Department at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, based at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, for full‑time Medical Laboratory Assistant positions within the Blood Sciences Pathology Department.
* 2 37.5‑hour permanent positions
* 2 37.5‑hour fixed‑term positions (12 months)
This important role supports the Pathology Department and is suitable for individuals who enjoy a varied workload. Experience of computer data input is essential; applicants should demonstrate current IT skills. Candidates must be literate and numerate. GCSE Grade C/4 or above in Mathematics and English is desirable, as is previous laboratory or healthcare experience and familiarity with medical terminology.
Hours: Majority of work between 09:00 and 21:00 with participation in out‑of‑hours rota, including late shifts, weekends, and Bank Holidays.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidates will work as part of the multidisciplinary Blood Sciences laboratory team following appropriate training and completion of relevant in‑house competencies.
* Support Biomedical Scientists and Biomedical Assistants in processing and analysis of laboratory samples.
* Receive and process a wide variety of biological specimens.
* Receive training in phlebotomy, including taking blood samples from patients.
* Enter patient requests onto the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
* Assist in the provision of phlebotomy service for both inpatients and outpatients.
* Use calibrated pipettes accurately.
* Load, unload, and file samples.
* Maintain housekeeping duties and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
* Handle referred work to and from other laboratories.
* Communicate results and respond to queries from service users via telephone and other methods.
Qualifications
* Good standard of literacy and numeracy.
* Evidence of good IT skills.
* GCSE or equivalent qualification in 3 subjects, including science.
* Other science or healthcare related qualification is desirable.
* Experience in the NHS or a caring environment.
* Ability to apply repetitive work.
* Previous use of analytical / diagnostic equipment.
Person Specification
* Excellent attention to detail.
* Strong computer skills, including accurate recording of patient information.
* The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
