Job Summary
Programme Overview
We are looking for a highly experienced Payments Data Migration Architect to lead data architecture and migration activities across a complex payments transformation programme. This role requires strong expertise in payments systems, mainframe data environments, and migration execution across critical transaction platforms. The successful candidate will own the data architecture bridging legacy mainframe systems and target platforms, defining mappings, extraction strategies, controls, reconciliation, and migration assurance.
Key Responsibilities
Data Architecture & Migration Strategy
* Own end-to-end data architecture between mainframe and target platforms.
* Define source-to-target mappings and transformation logic.
* Establish migration controls, governance, and validation processes.
* Lead data migration planning, rehearsals, and cutover readiness.
Mainframe Data Expertise
Work extensively with IBM DB2 on Mainframe, including:
* Indexing
* Clustering
* Partitioning
* Archiving
* Query optimisation in high-volume environments
Data Extraction & ETL Delivery
* Design safe extraction strategies from complex and congested tables.
* Deliver ETL processes in controlled production environments.
* Ensure no disruption to BAU payment processing during extraction runs.
* Manage performance and operational risk during migration activity.
Data Quality, Reconciliation & Validation
* Define and execute reconciliation frameworks.
* Validate completeness, accuracy, and integrity of migrated datasets.
* Maintain data lineage and audit traceability throughout migration.
Payments Domain Integration
Support data migration across payment systems covering:
* BACS
* Faster Payments (FPS)
* WIFT
* SEPA
* Understand how payment messages, transactions, and downstream processes interact across production systems.
Stakeholder Management
* Work closely with SMEs, engineers, DBAs, architects, and programme teams.
* Document assumptions, risks, mappings, and technical decisions.
* Escalate issues early and provide pragmatic resolutions.
Mandatory Skills & Experience
* Strong experience delivering data migration in banking environments, ideally payments.
* Proven experience bridging legacy mainframe systems and modern target platforms.
* Deep expertise in IBM DB2 on Mainframe.
* Strong knowledge of ETL, data mapping, lineage, and reconciliation.
* Experience extracting data from high-volume live systems without disruption.
* Understanding of payment schemes: BACS, FPS, SWIFT, SEPA.
* Strong risk awareness and governance mindset.
* Ability to work independently in ambiguous environments.
* Proactive issue management and clear escalation skills.
