Our client in Birmingham is seeking a highly skilled Working Capital Accountant to join their finance team on a temporary basis. This opportunity is perfect for someone with extensive experience in working capital management and a proven track record of reconciling complex balance sheets, particularly where there are significant backlogs.
What you'll do:
As a Working Capital Accountant, you will play a pivotal role in restoring order to the organisation’s financial records by addressing a backlog of balance sheet reconciliations. Your day-to-day activities will involve collaborating with colleagues across departments to collect essential data, meticulously analysing account balances, and preparing comprehensive reconciliations that stand up to scrutiny from both internal stakeholders and external auditors. You will be instrumental in identifying areas for improvement within existing processes, helping to strengthen financial controls and ensure ongoing compliance.
* Take ownership of reconciling a backlog of balance sheets, ensuring accuracy and completeness across all accounts.
* Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders to gather necessary information and resolve outstanding issues related to working capital.
* Prepare detailed reconciliations and supporting documentation for review by senior finance leaders and auditors.
* Identify discrepancies or anomalies within the accounts and implement corrective actions in line with best practice accounting standards.
* Support month-end and year-end closing activities by providing timely and accurate reconciliations of working capital accounts.
* Maintain up-to-date records of all reconciliations performed, ensuring transparency and audit readiness at all times.
* Assist in process improvement initiatives aimed at streamlining working capital management and enhancing overall financial controls.
* Communicate progress regularly to management, highlighting any risks or challenges encountered during the reconciliation process.
What you bring:
The ideal candidate for the Working Capital Accountant role will bring substantial experience gained from similar positions within fast-moving or complex organisations. Your background should include full professional accountancy qualifications (ACA/ACCA/CIMA), underpinned by deep knowledge of working capital management practices. You will have demonstrated your ability to tackle challenging backlogs in balance sheet reconciliations with precision and care.
* Full professional qualification (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) is essential for this position, demonstrating your technical competence and commitment to high standards.
* Extensive experience managing working capital within large or complex organisations, including hands-on involvement with balance sheet reconciliations.
* Proven ability to address backlogs in financial records efficiently while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy throughout the process.
* Strong understanding of accounting principles relevant to working capital management, including current assets, liabilities, accruals, prepayments, and intercompany transactions.
* Excellent communication skills enabling you to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels of the business as well as external auditors when required.
* Demonstrated problem-solving abilities with a proactive approach towards identifying issues and implementing practical solutions within tight deadlines.
* Experience supporting month-end and year-end close processes by delivering timely reconciliations that facilitate smooth reporting cycles.
* Ability to maintain clear documentation for audit purposes while adhering strictly to internal policies and regulatory requirements.
