Technical Adviser – Role Overview
The VOA is recruiting a Qualified Surveyor to join the Litigation and Technical Policy Team as a Technical Adviser.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and support in local taxation, working within a team passionate about their work and collaboration. You will handle unique, challenging, and highly technical cases, collaborating with solicitors and barristers, and advising on technical and legal issues across the VOA.
Your responsibilities will include managing litigation cases such as hearings before the Valuation Tribunal, appeals to the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber) under simplified procedures, and proceedings in the High Court. You may also appear as an advocate on behalf of the Valuation Officer / Listing Officer. Additionally, you will provide technical, legal, and valuation advice across the VOA.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to lead on high-profile and complex cases, with autonomy to manage your workload independently and resolve sensitive cases effectively.
Technical Adviser – Key Responsibilities
* Manage litigation cases, including hearings at the Valuation Tribunal, appeals to the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber), and High Court proceedings. You may also act as an advocate for the VOA/LO.
* Use analytical skills to resolve complex or sensitive litigation cases.
* Contribute to developing technical and procedural guidance, ensuring consistent understanding and approach.
* Research, analyze, and evaluate issues, identifying options and assessing risks.
* Identify, escalate, and manage risks and issues, connecting information from various sources to identify trends and emerging risks.
* Develop and deliver technical updates and presentations to enhance capability within the VOA.
* Travel occasionally within the UK, including London, to liaise with HMRC solicitors, Counsel, attend tribunal hearings, and deliver presentations.
* Support technical development and change initiatives, contributing to reforms and transformation projects as needed.
