Lloyd’s register foundation contemporary maritime curator, digital content (internal only)

London
Royal Museums Greenwich
Curator
Posted: 12 August
Offer description

Building on the success of an initial five-year grant from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, we want to use their continued support to enable Royal Museums Greenwich to fulfil the role of international ‘broadcasting house’ promoting the importance of shipping as well as highlighting threats to ocean health, seafarer wellbeing and the need for safer seas; and becoming the place where the public, academia, and maritime industries tackle contemporary maritime matters. We also seek to create active ocean citizens by using Royal Museums Greenwich’s collections to learn from the past, understand the present and inspire the future.

Working within the Curatorial and Research department and reporting to the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Senior Curator of Contemporary Maritime, there are two overarching aims that will inform and guide the activities undertaken by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Contemporary Maritime Curator: Digital Content:

1. Creating digital content to raise public awareness of the importance of shipping and the wider maritime sector to our daily lives, tackling the well-recognised challenge of ‘sea-blindness’.

2. Creating digital content to increase and improve ocean literacy across our audiences thereby creating responsible ocean citizens who understand the importance of our oceans to the overall health of our planet within the context of climate change.

The successful candidate will have experience in undertaking independent research. Maritime is a wide and diverse topic and it isn’t expected that an individual will be an expert in all aspects, however they will need strong knowledge of a range of maritime topics and should be able to demonstrate experience in quickly being able to gain knowledge of new topics. A strong track record in making academic or technical information accessible to a general audience is vital for this role.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 5 - management and proficient specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, occasional evening and weekend work is required.

We offer a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity, a generous pension and benefits scheme, 22 days annual leave (rising to 25 days after 1 year), learning and development, an environment with flexible working options, plus many more.
