John Murray Press is one of the fastest growing and most profitable divisions of Hachette UK, with imprints that encompass a range of bestselling, pioneering and prize-winning publishing. We publish a variety of titles, including debut works, crime fiction, celebrity-led titles, lifestyle, memoir, history, and non-fiction. Our authors include Billy Connolly, Miriam Margolyes, Mick Herron, Trevor Noah, and Akala. We were shortlisted for Publisher of the Year at the British Book Awards in 2022. We pride ourselves on being entrepreneurial, curious, and passionate about discovering and nurturing new voices that can influence the world.
What you'll be doing
We have an exciting opportunity for a creative, motivated, and talented designer/midweight to join our design team. Reporting to the Deputy Art Director, you'll be an organized and energetic individual essential to our close-knit team. Your role will involve delivering targeted, market-leading book cover designs from initial brief to final artwork, collaborating with designers and illustrators to create innovative, commercially successful designs.
This role focuses on our literary fiction and non-fiction imprints, John Murray and Baskerville, offering a great opportunity for a designer looking to advance their career.
Who we are looking for
You should be a self-starting, organized creative who enjoys working with a passionate team. Your portfolio must demonstrate a strong understanding of consumer-focused design across various projects. You should be enthusiastic about the creative process, eager to deliver forward-thinking designs, and skilled at building relationships with colleagues, illustrators, and authors. Experience in fiction and non-fiction cover design within publishing is essential.
Responsibilities
* Design distinctive covers that meet market needs across all imprints, especially John Murray and Baskerville.
* Create approximately 40 covers annually.
* Manage projects from research and visual concepts to print-ready files.
* Commission freelance designers and illustrators.
* Stay informed about publishing and design trends to inform your work.
* Build effective relationships with the editorial team, conveying ideas and interpreting feedback.
Requirements
* Proven experience in the design industry.
* Strong technical skills with proficiency in Mac and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
* A portfolio demonstrating passion for design, commercial awareness, and ability.
* Experience in book design and visual design to develop new concepts.
* Knowledge of print and digital production techniques.
* Ability to work collaboratively and prioritize effectively.
* Excellent communication and presentation skills.
* Understanding of consumer needs and market positioning.
* Meticulous attention to detail.
Please submit your CV, cover letter, and a portfolio of relevant work in your application.

Our staff are our greatest asset, reflected in our benefits:
* 28 days annual leave, increasing with service, plus bank holidays.
* Private medical insurance, pension schemes, rent deposit loans, and more.
* Additional benefits include community days, summer hours, retail discounts, cycle schemes, vouchers, training, development programs, book discounts, employee networks, season ticket loans, and more.
This role can be based in London, Sheffield, Manchester, or Bristol, with a hybrid work model.
