About the Opportunity
Amentum is recruiting for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Energy business, supporting a key client’s UK nuclear fleet through a business transformation and supporting new small modular reactor developers. Our work covers Licensing, New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling, with capabilities in demand across the nuclear sector.
Your role will be to manage and deliver mechanical design solutions to time, cost, and quality on projects of varying sizes. You’ll work alongside Operations and Engineering Managers to enable maximum value delivery.
This role will be based at one of our Energy offices (Newcastle, Warrington, Glasgow, Gloucester, Stockton, Bristol, or Knutsford). We promote flexible working patterns.
Role responsibilities:
1. Take ownership of technical challenges, develop strategies, and implement solutions through stakeholder engagement.
2. Deliver analysis and design technical solutions.
3. Produce and review design deliverables (assumption notes, technical specifications, calculation notes, methodology plans, etc.).
4. Work with international SMR developers to pass the Office of Nuclear Regulation’s Generic Design Assessment process.
5. Review and justify design decisions to the ONR.
6. Fulfill and take ownership of CDM responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
* MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Mechanical Engineering or relevant degree.
* Experience in heavy infrastructure projects, nuclear, or regulated industries.
* Chartered status or working towards it (IMechE, MIET).
* Ability to work within a design team and collaborate across disciplines.
* Experience with American codes in design and construction.
* Design experience with pumps, valves, heat exchangers, tanks, filters, or HVAC equipment, including datasheet authoring.
* Proficiency with CAD software (AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo, SolidWorks).
* Experience with technical drawings per BS EN 8888 and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams.
* Familiarity with safety cases in industrial environments.
* Knowledge of Matlab and MathCAD is beneficial.
* Experience writing test plans for Equipment Qualification.
* Understanding of UK Nuclear Regulatory processes in mechanical engineering is desirable.
