The Audit Manager is a key role that supports the Director of Internal Audit and Internal Audit Senior Leadership Team in providing HMRC Chief Executive with advice and assurance on the overall adequacy and effectiveness of their respective frameworks of governance and risk.

Person specification

[p]The role can be directed in two primary ways and must be flexible in working across each area:[/p][p][b]Role responsibilities include[/b][/p][list=ul][li]Leading and / or personally delivering complex, high‑profile and sensitive audits, including work that crosses organisational boundaries.[/li][li]Ensuring audit work meets professional Internal Audit Standards and provides clear, actionable insight on governance, risk and control.[/li][li]Building and maintaining effective relationships with senior audit sponsors, including Directors and Directors General, providing constructive challenge and influence.[/li][li]Leading, developing and motivating Senior Auditors and Trainee Auditors, setting clear expectations and ensuring delivery of high‑quality work.[/li][li]Supporting performance management, capability building and talent development within Internal Audit.[/li][li]Contributing to the development and delivery of the Internal Audit Plan, ensuring resources are focused on high‑risk areas.[/li][li]Playing an active role in change and continuous improvement across Internal Audit, including promoting the use of data analytics in audit delivery.[/li][li]Maintaining personal continuing professional development in line with professional body requirements.[/li][li]Working flexibly as a member of the Internal Audit Leadership Team to support wider delivery priorities and organisational objectives.[/li][/list][p][b]Essential Criteria:[/b][/p][list=ul][li]Fully qualified Chartered Internal Auditor (CMIIA/CIA) or fully qualified Accountant (member of a CCAB body: ICAEW, ACCA, CIPFA, ICAS, Chartered Accountants Ireland or CIMA), with a completed logbook and relevant post‑qualification experience.[/li][li]Demonstrable experience of leading and / or delivering Internal Audit work within a medium to large, complex organisation.[/li][li]Experience of managing complex audits and exercising sound professional judgement.[/li][li]Proven experience of leading, developing and managing people, including supporting performance and capability development.[/li][li]Experience of operating across portfolio, functional or organisational boundaries, with evidence of influencing senior stakeholders and managing competing priorities.[/li][/list][p][b]Desirable Criteria:[/b][/p][list=ul][li]Commercial / procurement / transformation audit experience.[/li][li]Application of data analytics to enhance audit coverage.[/li][li]Experience in financial systems/processes.[/li][/list][p][b]Further Information[/b][/p][p]If you are found to be appointable at advertised grade but there are no positions available (or all positions have been filled), you may be offered a role at a lower grade. Offers will be made in merit order, and in line with our reserve list policy. Qualifications

Fully qualified Chartered Internal Auditor (CMIIA/CIA) or fully qualified Accountant (member of a CCAB body: ICAEW, ACCA, CIPFA, ICAS, Chartered Accountants Ireland or CIMA), with a completed logbook and relevant post‑qualification experience.
