Job Summary
Working under the direct supervision of the practice nursing team and in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.
Responsibilities
* Obtain patient consent for the collection of a blood sample
* Perform venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
* Maintain accurate patient records
* Correctly label, package and store samples
* Use specimen log, resolve discrepancies
* Ensure samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
* Maintain liaison with laboratory staff
* Record BP, pulse, pulse oximetry, and temperature readings
* Facilitate routine and 24‑hour BP monitoring
* Conduct urinalysis
* Perform new patient checks
* Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
* Record ECGs
* Administer B12 injections
* Administer Flu, Pneumonia and Shingles injections (training provided if necessary)
* Support the practice nurse with chronic disease clinics
* Operate spirometry (training provided if necessary)
* Perform ear irrigation (training provided if necessary)
* Chaperone patient care procedures
* Process and manage laboratory samples requested by GPs or nurses
* Store and manage vaccines, monitor cold chain, record temperatures
* Maintain equipment and restock vaccines, manage stock rotation
* Check and maintain emergency equipment
* Ensure clinical waste removal according to IPC policy
* Clear and restock consulting rooms
* Assist GPs during minor operations
* Assist in assessment and surveillance of patients' health and wellbeing
* Help raise awareness of health and wellbeing and promote it
* Collect and collate data on health and wellbeing needs
Qualifications
* GCSE grade in English and Maths
* Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2
* Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 3
* CACHE (Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education) qualifications or equivalent
* Open University (OU) qualifications
Experience
* Experience of working within a nursing team
* Experience of dealing with vulnerable patients
* Experience working in primary care (desirable)
* Experience working in a GP practice (desirable)
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
Submission to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is required under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975.
