Consultant in Care of the Elderly with up to £28k bonus at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW).
Opportunity to join UHBW as a Consultant in Care of the Elderly. The post is primarily based at Weston General Hospital.
Key responsibilities
The appointee will support the development of Care of the Elderly services, including frailty admissions pathways, same-day emergency care for the frail elderly, reducing unnecessary admissions, decreasing length of stay, and ensuring safe discharge in collaboration with system partners. The role includes teaching junior staff the management of elderly patients and contributing to multidisciplinary care, with participation in the 1:11 consultant on-call rota. The post may involve cross-site working within the trust as part of full clinical service integration.
Weston General Hospital features a Geriatric Emergency Medicine Service (GEMS) and a transitioning to the Healthy Weston 2 programme, aiming to deliver high-quality, sustainable emergency and planned care.

Qualifications and Registration
Essential
* Fully registered with the GMC. Certification of Completion of Specialist Training (CCT) or equivalent, OR Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview
* Within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview (CESR applications have different eligibility)
* Must be on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatrics to start the appointment
Desirable
* Higher academic qualification (MD, PhD or equivalent)
* Educational Supervisor accreditation
* Advanced communication skills training
* Good Clinical Practice training
Experience and Skills
Essential
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in medicine for older people
* Ability to deliver services with minimal direct supervision
* Strong multidisciplinary team collaboration
* Ability to respond to individual patient and carer needs
Desirable
* Ability to lead clinical care across boundaries
* Special interest/expertise aligned with Trust service strategy
* Experience drafting or contributing to multi-professional care pathways
Clinical Knowledge & Governance
Essential
* Knowledge of NHS priorities in geriatrics and ability to organise a specialist service
* Broad IT skills
* Understanding of clinical governance and quality improvement
* Commitment to CPD
Desirable
* Experience as lead for clinical governance
* Leadership in improvement initiatives
Research, Teaching & Leadership
Essential
* Knowledge of research principles and involvement in research; ability to apply research findings to clinical problems
* Commitment to teaching in clinical and academic settings; supervision of trainees

* Ability to enhance the department's academic profile; publications; supervision of student/research projects
