Role Overview
Veterinary Surgeon needed for award‑winning, fabulous practice in Biddulph, Staffordshire, on the Staffordshire/Cheshire border.
Working Hours and Patterns
20–40 hours a week over 2 to 5 days. No out‑of‑hours duty, 1 Saturday in 3 or 6 (8 am–1 pm). Salary £40 k–65 k based on a 40‑hr full‑time equivalent.
We treat all staff (vets, nurses, receptionists) as equal team members no matter when they work. This position is advertised for 20–37.5 hours, but we can discuss alternative patterns that suit you: full days, short days, split shifts, early or late starts. Consulting‑only is also welcome, as are those who love surgery or imaging.
Appointment times are 20 minutes standard, 40 minutes for euthanasia or complex issues.
We aim to finish appointments on time. If an appointment runs over because of a complex case, we will give you the time back.
We typically have no out‑of‑hours duty, night checks, Sundays or bank holidays. Saturday mornings may be 1 in 3 or 1 in 6, alongside two receptionists and two RVNs, only 8‑am to 1‑pm. If Saturdays suit you better, let us know.
We provide proper breaks: two staff rooms, outside staff area, pool table, massage chair, espresso machine, Velvetris hot‑chocolate machine, toastie maker. Use the staff shower if you return to the practice after a walk, cycle or run.
Practice Environment
Our facility includes dedicated clinical office, 8 consulting rooms, euthanasia room, cat‑only waiting and ward (cat‑friendly silver status), two full theatres, dental theatre and a large training room. The space is designed to emphasise wellbeing of staff and patients with large airy reception and natural light throughout.
Practice Culture
We were Petplan Practice of the Year 2019, and have won two previous awards. Our practice manager was a finalist for 2022. We provide excellent care, a quality range of equipment, a knowledgeable team and competitive fees.
We manage uncertainty and urgency by including same‑day and emergency slots in the diary, giving you time for extras. You have an extra 1 hr 40 min per day on the diary to follow up on cases, report results and catch up on notes, plus a 1‑hr lunch.
We work collaboratively; we celebrate team events but also respect boundaries. Open dialogue and discussion are encouraged, and we support work‑life balance. We try to accommodate time‑off requests whenever possible.
Experience
We welcome candidates with any level of experience, including recent graduates. New graduates are already part of our team, so experience is preferred but not mandatory. Special skills, certificates or preferences are welcome; we will discuss them during the hiring process.
