Maintenance Engineer
Location - Portal Mill (Melksham) UK
Job summary
We are seeking a proactive Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer to support a mixed product manufacturing environment. The role involves carrying out planned and reactive maintenance, repairs, and installation work on manufacturing plant and production equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations.
The role offers opportunities for ongoing training, skill development, and involvement in continuous improvement projects within a supportive engineering team.
Working on a rotating shift pattern (earlies, days, and lates), you will apply your mechanical, electrical, and/or control systems expertise to maximise equipment availability, reliability, and production performance whilst minimising downtime. We are looking for a motivated individual with a can-do attitude, capable of working independently while also thriving as part of a collaborative multi-functional engineering team. All work is carried out in line with the company’s Health & Safety, Quality, and Environmental management systems.
Specific responsibilities
Maintenance Engineering
Provide a high quality proactive and reactive maintenance service to Operations. Support the installation of new equipment and processes as well as process, layout and location changes. Maintain the workshop area and subsequent spares availability to ensure minimum downtime. Responsible for the day‑to‑day operation and periodic inspection of the following key systems:
1. Dust extraction (including the spark suppression system)
2. LEV Testing
3. Compressed air
4. Electrical Installations in relation to Operation’s (those in the factory space)
Support Operations by investigating improvements and providing in-house modification to existing equipment, improving safety, quality, capacity and/or reliability. Evaluate new/alternative vendors for consumables, piping, belts, etc.
Ways of Working
Engage in problem solving and lean techniques, identifying root cause, conducting structured investigations with analysis and implementing corrective countermeasures. Complete all necessary documentation regarding jobs carried out (paper and electronic) reporting clearly and concisely. Be responsible for contractors carrying out maintenance and repair tasks, including site inductions.
Compliance, Environment and Health & Safety Requirements
Sustain knowledge, comply with and implement the latest regulations; HSE guidance and Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP) that relate to the responsibilities of the Maintenance team. Work within the Company’s Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental management systems and compliance regulations. Create and periodically update risk assessments, PUWER assessments and SSOW (safe systems of work) relating to maintenance tasks, manufacturing equipment or production processes.
Job holder requirements
Essential:
5. Formal qualification in Electromechanical engineering, or similar subject (e.g. City & Guilds or equivalent)
6. Strong and demonstrable experience of reactive & pro-active maintenance
7. Process improvement experience
8. Knowledge of 3 phase equipment, machinery and systems
9. Competent with business processes and tools, using appropriate electronic system and IT packages
10. Ability to communicate information in verbal and written form
11. Strong professional interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage challenging interactions fairly and respectfully in a manufacturing environment
Preferred:
12. Wiring Regulations City & Guilds 2382 (to latest edition) or equivalent
13. Equipment installation familiarity
14. Knowledge and application of LOLER and work at height regulations
15. Understanding of 5s and lean initiatives
16. Experience of PUWER regulations
17. Practiced at communicating information to a range of stakeholders
18. Comfortable building positive working relationships with a range of internal customers
