Job overview

The Royal London Hospital is looking for an experienced Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our newly established TTA Optimisation Team. This role is vital for enhancing the quality and speed of discharge medication processes, ensuring our patients receive the best possible care.

Main duties of the job

1. TTA Coordination: Oversee the coordination and processing of TTA prescriptions, ensuring compliance with local and national guidelines.
2. Supervision: Provide guidance and supervision to pharmacy assistants and trainees, fostering their development and ensuring a high standard of service.
3. Quality Improvement: Identify inefficiencies and contribute to the continuous improvement of TTA services by implementing local solutions and supporting new initiatives.
4. Training and Development: Train and develop junior staff, maintaining high performance and accountability within the team.
5. Audit Participation: Support departmental audits and quality assurance processes to maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

Essential criteria

6. •Significant experience working as a registered pharmacy technician in a hospital.
7. •Proven experience supporting or delivering discharge medication services, including TTAs or dosette boxes.
8. •Supervisory experience, including allocation of daily tasks and performance feedback.
9. •Proficiency in dispensing, accuracy checking (if accredited), and stock control processes.
10. •Experience with medicines reconciliation, POD assessment, and ward-based services relevant to discharge.
11. •Experience communicating with patients, families, and clinical staff under time pressure.

Desirable criteria

12. •Experience leading or participating in quality improvement projects related to discharge or medicines optimisation.
13. •Experience training and developing pharmacy assistants, PTPTs, or rotational staff.
14. •Familiarity with supporting audits or KPI monitoring (e.g. turnaround times, CD compliance).
15. •Experience with robot-supported dispensing systems.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

16. •Good understanding of the medicines management process, particularly in relation to discharge.
17. •Familiarity with CD regulations, GPhC standards, and safe and secure handling of medicines.
18. •Awareness principles of cost-effective use of medicines.
19. •Knowledge of POD schemes and one-stop dispensing.
20. •Understanding of the importance of SOPs, KPIs, and audit in quality improvement.

Desirable criteria

21. •Understanding of how TTA services contribute to patient flow and bed management.
22. •Awareness of discharge barriers and the pharmacist-technician interface in a hub-based model.
23. •Knowledge of the specific requirements for supplying medicines to complex discharges (e.g. patients with dosette boxes or cognitive impairments).

Qualifications

Essential criteria

24. •BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences / NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent).
25. •Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
26. •Accredited Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT).

Desirable criteria

27. •HEE LaSE Medicines Optimisation or equivalent.
28. •Practice Supervisor or Train the Trainer qualification.
29. •ILM Level 2/3 in Leadership and Management or equivalent.
