The role

Help Young People Discover Their Potential and Build Their Future

At Barnardo's, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to develop the confidence, skills and experience needed to achieve their aspirations and move successfully into adulthood.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, compassionate and ambitious tutor to join our Employment, Training & Skills Centre in Bradford.

This is an exciting opportunity to deliver our new Occupational Studies for the Workplace programme alongside our Work Placement and Employability Pathway, helping young people aged 16–19 (and up to 25 with an Education, Health and Care Plan) develop the skills, confidence and workplace experience required for employment, apprenticeships and further education.

Many of the young people who attend our centre have experienced barriers to learning, disrupted education, low confidence, SEND, SEMH needs or uncertainty about their future career direction. We are looking for someone who can see potential where others see challenges and who is committed to helping every learner achieve positive outcomes.

About the Role

This is a unique and rewarding role combining vocational teaching, employability development and work placement coordination.

You will be responsible for delivering engaging Occupational Studies programmes which introduce learners to a range of employment sectors including business, customer service, retail, enterprise and workplace skills. You will also oversee learners enrolled on our Work Placement Pathway, ensuring they gain meaningful workplace experience that supports their career aspirations and Preparation for Adulthood outcomes.

You will play a key role in helping learners develop:

  • Confidence and resilience
  • Communication and teamwork skills
  • Professional behaviours and workplace expectations
  • Time management and personal responsibility
  • Career awareness and employability skills
  • Independence and Preparation for Adulthood outcomes
  • Positive attitudes towards learning and work
  • Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality Occupational Studies sessions.
  • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated learning that meets the needs of all learners.
  • Support learners to identify career aspirations and progression goals.
  • Monitor learner progress, achievement and attendance.
  • Conduct learner reviews and maintain accurate records.
  • Support learners to develop workplace behaviours and professional standards.
  • Work closely with employers, the Employer Engagement Officer and wider centre staff to secure and maintain high-quality work placements.
  • Monitor learner engagement and progress whilst on placement.
  • Liaise with employers to gather feedback and support successful placement outcomes.
  • Support learners to overcome barriers that may impact their attendance, achievement or progression.
  • Contribute to EHCP reviews and support Preparation for Adulthood outcomes where required.
  • Promote safeguarding, wellbeing, equality, diversity and inclusion throughout all aspects of delivery.
  • Maintain high expectations regarding attendance, punctuality, behaviour and commitment to work placement activity.
  • About You

We are looking for someone who genuinely believes in the potential of young people and can motivate learners who may have previously struggled within education.

You will be able to build positive relationships whilst maintaining clear expectations and professional boundaries. You will understand that preparing young people for employment means helping them develop resilience, responsibility and confidence alongside vocational skills.

    Essential Requirements

  • Teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one).
  • Experience of teaching or training young people aged 16–25.
  • Experience supporting learners with SEND, SEMH needs or additional barriers to learning.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience of planning and delivering engaging learning programmes.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire young people with diverse needs and aspirations.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Understanding of employability skills, workplace expectations and Preparation for Adulthood principles.
  • Desirable Requirements

  • Experience within Further Education, alternative provision or post-16 education.
  • Experience working with employers, work placements or vocational programmes.
  • Knowledge of careers education, employability and progression pathways.
  • Experience supporting learners with EHCPs.
  • Understanding of local labour market opportunities and employment sectors.
  • Experience delivering portfolio-based qualifications.
  • An Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification is not essential but would be highly beneficial, enabling the successful candidate to contribute to maintaining high standards of teaching, learning and assessment across the centre.
  • A full driving licence and access to a vehicle would be beneficial.
