Overview
Clinical Lead Physiotherapist in Acute Medicine (Band 7) 12 months fixed term Maternity Cover. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Lead Physiotherapist specialising in or with a keen interest in Acute Medicine to join our Therapy service. If you are looking for a new leadership role using your clinical experience and opportunities to grow, develop and work with others, then this role will be ideal for you. The successful candidate should have experience in treating patients with varied clinical presentations, as well as bring new ideas to develop the service further for both staff and patients. This is a 12 months fixed-term opportunity to cover maternity leave. A secondment would be considered.
You will work jointly alongside the Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist and will provide senior clinical and professional leadership and development to the therapy team. You will manage the team on a day-to-day basis and will also be a point of contact for advice and support for colleagues across the Therapies department. You would be expected to work as part of our 7-day service where weekend working will be required. You would also be required to be an integral part of the Respiratory on call evening (until 10pm) and weekend cover. To perform a specialist Physiotherapy role within the Directorate clinical specialty, for patients on own caseload, many with complex / highly complex needs. To act as a role model for clinical, operational and professional leadership, setting and upholding agreed standards and processes to enable patients to receive high quality evidence-based care.
Responsibilities
* Lead on the clinical leadership of the Acute Medicine Therapy Team as the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist.
* Manage a clinical caseload in the area, including dealing with complex cases.
* Work flexibly to provide cover to other clinical areas according to the needs of patients and demands of the service.
* Participate in 7-day working patterns, including Bank Holidays.
* Participate in a respiratory on-call service covering evenings (until 10pm) and weekends.
* Provide clinical expertise and leadership to a large team of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy Support staff within the clinical area in the management of patients on the wards and in departments.
* Lead on the annual appraisal of allocated staff and assist in continual learning and personal development plans with succession planning.
* Identify and manage clinical performance issues within therapy staff in the clinical area.
* Develop working guidelines, protocols and practices that enhance the patient experience in line with national and Trust policies, in liaison with the Therapy leads.
* Lead on the implementation of action plans from national and local strategies, benchmarking standards and clinical audits.
* Represent the therapy services at specialty and trust-wide forums and provide feedback to therapy teams, leading on actions arising from them as appropriate.
* Deputise for other therapy leads as required.
* Lead the therapy team within the directorate on a day-to-day basis, coordinating cover for absence and addressing minor operational issues.
* Work with the Head and Deputy Head of Therapies on operational management of budget, facilities and resources to provide a safe, high quality and cost-effective service.
* Lead on recruitment of staff within the team with support from the Deputy Head of Therapies.
* Participate in operational planning and policy/service development within the directorate, leading on delegated projects under guidance of the Deputy Head of Therapies.
* Ensure staff have access to Trust policies and that compliance is maintained.
* Mentor and assess pre-registration and work experience students allocated to the team, ensuring placement standards.
* Provide regular reports to the Deputy Head of Therapies on team management and performance, escalating significant risks or incidents as needed.
* Provide opportunities for staff to receive information and support and participate in forums for discussion and planning.
* Demonstrate and apply a high level of understanding of illness, injury and disability and the complex interaction between health, functional ability, psychological and social issues as appropriate to Physiotherapy within the clinical area.
* Identify, select, implement and evaluate intervention options balancing risk, safety, patient choice, independence, and eligibility for services, providing expert advice to junior colleagues.
* Communicate effectively with patients, carers, the clinical team, and other agencies as a representative of the Therapy services.
* Maintain accurate records of clinical interventions in line with legal and organisational requirements.
* Promote and lead on evidence-based practice and audit processes; work to ensure action plans from strategies and audits are achieved.
Providing and Improving Patient Care
* Be a point of contact for patients and relatives; lead on development and sharing of patient and carer information.
* Implement methods of gathering and using patient feedback to improve services; respect diversity and provide a sensitive service.
* Reflect on ethical issues impacting Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy service provision and provide guidance as required.
* Develop guidelines, protocols and practices that enhance patient experience in line with policies in liaison with therapy leads.
Audit, Evaluation and Research
* Promote and lead on evidence-based practice and audit processes.
* Work with peers to ensure action plans from national/local strategies and clinical audits are achieved.
* Participate in audit and research projects to broaden research and development skills; foster a culture of innovation.
Management and Teamwork
* Promote safe and effective communication within therapy and multi-professional teams; facilitate access to clinical support and supervision.
* Keep therapy leads informed of risks, staffing levels, and equipment needs; provide reports as required.
* Participate in skill mix reviews based on patient dependency and activity data.
* Represent therapy services as required and deputise for Heads as appropriate.
* With planned or unplanned leave, work flexibly to meet priorities and coordinate cross-service cover.
* Promote awareness of the role of OT and Physiotherapy within the Trust and negotiate priorities as appropriate.
* Ensure all staff achieve mandatory training and development; implement approved competencies; process staff claims and co-ordinate rotas and performance management.
* Lead recruitment and selection of therapy staff and investigate complaints/adverse incidents with lessons learned and action plans.
* Ensure annual reviews for staff to support development plans aligned to the Knowledge and Skills Framework.
* Monitor resource use and work with leaders to meet performance targets.
Trust Wide Responsibilities
* Act as a resource for multidisciplinary teams with involvement in teaching and training; model excellent customer service.
* Attend and lead professional meetings as required.
