Freelance Marketing and Communications Manager
Fee: £250 per day x 16 days = £4,000. Commitment: 16 days total. We are open to discussing the days, and would be open to doing 1 or 2 days per week as preferred for both parties.
Responsible to: Executive Producer and Artistic Director
Place of work: Richard Street Studios, 44-46 Richard Street, Rochdale, OL11 1DU. Some meetings can happen flexibly online, but we would prefer for the 1 day to be in person if possible.
Overview of Role
Breaking Barriers Rochdale is looking for a creative, strategic and versatile Freelance Marketing and Communications Manager to help us share our work with wider audiences and to amplify our voice and impact. You’ll be supporting the launch of our flagship project Stories We Tell and building the profile of Richard Street Studios (the creative hub we manage), whilst also supporting us to create a comms strategy to support our reach locally, nationally, and one day beyond. This is both a creative and strategic role for someone who enjoys organisational and project‑based storytelling, connecting with communities, and building a plan to help to grow Breaking Barriers’ online reach.
Job Description
* Interrogate Breaking Barriers’ current marketing systems, including the website, social media platforms, ticket booking platforms, mailing lists and newsletters, and create an inventory or report on our current methods.
* Lead the Breaking Barriers team to discuss better systems and find the best ways to implement these within the organisation.
* Lead integrated campaigns across print, digital, PR and any other relevant platforms.
* Shape the Breaking Barriers story and create a storytelling strategy that highlights the origin story, the vision, the young company, the projects, the studio, the team and more.
* Identify any needs for training within the team.
* Grow Breaking Barriers’ audiences, income and brand profile.
* Identify a brand and style to use across all of Breaking Barriers’ platforms.
* Champion values‑led communications across all platforms.
* Create a brief for a Marketing Assistant – a new role which will be recruited to deliver upon the strategy that has been created.
* Build and maintain relationships with Press/media.
* Prepare and circulate press releases as required.
* Create a plan for the collection of audience data, testimonials and feedback to support impact reports, evaluations, and reporting criteria.
* Adhere to GDPR regulations.
* Adhere to Breaking Barriers’ policies.
* Be an advocate for and represent Breaking Barriers at online/in‑person events as required and support our productions.
Skills Required
* A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a relevant marketing or communications role, ideally within the arts or cultural sector.
* Strong written and verbal communication, copy‑writing, and public speaking skills.
* Proven ability to plan and deliver effective long and short‑range marketing campaigns that achieve clear outcomes.
* Confident in managing and overseeing websites and digital platform management.
* Genuinely committed to working with Breaking Barriers and the communities in which they engage with.
* An ability to communicate to different audiences, partners, stakeholders, team members, and communities both online and in person.
* An interest and passion in supporting a small organisation to grow and build robust systems and strategies that will support future growth and resilience.
