The Role
As a Junior Engineering Technician you will join our specialist team supporting the maintenance and operation of advanced measurement equipment used to monitor ships and submarines. This is a hands-on role where you’ll help with equipment maintenance, building upkeep, and on-site checks, as well as taking part in deployments.
Day-to-day, you’ll help to repair, maintain and operate electronic and electrical systems, diagnose and fault-find issues with equipment, and assist with the design of systems for internal projects. You’ll carry out checks to make sure everything is safe, reliable and ready to use, while also reporting any defects or resource issues promptly to minimise downtime.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. Assisting with the design and implementation of electronic/electrical systems for internal projects
2. Repairing, maintaining, and operating electronic and electrical systems, including fault-finding and system checks
3. Participating in deployments from a Navy base, typically lasting 2–5 weeks, which occur only twice a year, with overtime paid at a competitive rate
4. Reporting defects or resource issues promptly and collaborating effectively with team members and stakeholders, while developing knowledge of EMB (Electromagnetic Baseline) systems
Essential experience of the Junior Engineering Technician:
5. Practical aptitude in electronics/electrical systems with hands-on fault-finding and repair skills
6. Awareness of EMB (Electromagnetic Baseline) systems or willingness to learn
7. Understanding of electromagnetic frequency and its application in measurement systems
8. Interest in (or awareness of) ship and submarine measurement concepts, such as acoustics and magnetics
9. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose issues independently
10. Team player with good communication skills and flexibility to support short-notice trials or deployments
Essential qualifications for the Junior Engineering Technician:
11. Maths and Science GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade A*– C
12. Practical qualification or proven hands-on experience in electronics or electrical work

This role is 37 hours per week based at Winfrith site in Dorset. Set working times are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, with flexibility where required.
