We are looking for a Food Safety Officer (FSO), Environmental Health Officer to join a south London borough on a contract basis.
This is an exciting opportunity to provide consultancy and regulatory services based in a London Borough. This role offers a unique chance to gain experience in an expanding environmental health consultancy service and environmental protection regulation.
Job Purpose:
To provide technical professional environmental health services with the overall aim of protecting and improving the health and wellbeing of residents, workers, and visitors within the borough. The post holder will undertake duties within the Food, Health and Safety Team.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Investigate service requests, identify contraventions of legislation, and take corrective actions in line with policies, procedures, and legislation, including handling appeals, infections, accidents, and risks.
2. Inspect or visit vehicles, stalls, plants, or equipment.
3. Enforce legislation and powers efficiently, including presenting evidence at legal hearings.
4. Conduct food hygiene and standards inspections, prepare reports, and manage related correspondence and notices.
5. Review applications, plans, and schemes for environmental guidance or clearance.
6. Sample, test, or seize food, equipment, materials, or substances.
7. Liaise with internal departments, external organizations, companies, and individuals to deliver effective services.
8. Keep the Group Manager informed of sensitive or complex issues.
9. Stay updated on relevant legislation, policies, and techniques.
10. Assist in publicity campaigns, educational work, and participate in meetings, exhibitions, or demonstrations.
11. Perform specialist environmental health duties as required.
12. Conduct research or surveys related to environmental health.
13. Ensure financial data is accurately recorded and budgets are managed effectively.
14. Train staff and visitors about the department's functions and new initiatives.
Minimum Requirements:
* Successful completion of The Higher Certificate in Food Control.
* Full qualification as EHORB registered and eligible for CIEH membership.
* Technical knowledge of environmental health or ability to develop it.
* Experience in enforcement actions.
* Effective communication skills.
* Ability to draft legal documents accurately.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
* Ability to record data using specialist software.
* Flexible attitude and adaptability to changing tasks.
* Teamwork skills and ability to deliver results.
* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to influence and support management and peers.
* Self-motivation, ability to work under pressure, and meet deadlines.
* Ability to manage complex projects and prioritize tasks efficiently.
