ML Photonic Ltd is a growing, high-technology manufacturer specialising in precision optical components and assemblies used in advanced photonic systems. We are seeking an experienced and driven Production Lead to oversee manufacturing operations at our Dunfermline facility.
This is a pivotal leadership role, offering the opportunity to shape production strategy, embed lean principles, and drive operational excellence in a high-precision, performance-critical environment.
The Role
Reporting to the UK General Manager, you will be responsible for leading and optimising all manufacturing operations, ensuring efficient, on-time, and high-quality production. You will champion continuous improvement, safety, and performance while fostering a culture of accountability and engagement across the production team.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Operational Leadership
* Develop and optimise production schedules to meet customer demand, throughput, and quality targets
* Align capacity planning with short- and long-term business objectives
* Coordinate closely with procurement, engineering, quality, and logistics teams
* Lead, coach, and develop production staff to achieve high performance
* Set and monitor KPIs, driving accountability and measurable improvements
Continuous Improvement & Quality
* Identify bottlenecks and quality issues, leading root cause analysis and corrective actions
* Facilitate cross-functional improvement initiatives
* Maintain and enhance standard operating procedures (SOPs)
* Ensure compliance with quality management systems (including ISO 9001)
* Support new product introductions (NPI), manufacturing readiness, and ramp-ups
Operational Control & Reporting
* Manage manpower, machinery, and materials to maximise efficiency
* Oversee maintenance planning to minimise downtime
* Track and analyse key metrics such as yield, throughput, scrap, and downtime
* Prepare operational reports for senior leadership
* Develop and manage the production department budget
* Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality
Health, Safety & Compliance
* Promote and enforce a strong Health & Safety culture
* Ensure compliance with regulatory, environmental, and cleanroom standards
About You
* Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing or similar) or equivalent experience
* 5+ years' experience in high-precision manufacturing (optics/photonics highly desirable)
* Proven leadership experience managing production teams
* Strong knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, or similar continuous improvement methodologies
* Familiar with ISO quality systems and cleanroom operations
* Experienced in ERP/MRP systems and production planning tools
* Confident communicator with strong reporting and presentation skills
