Role Overview

Do you want to drive forward the circular economy and influence future waste legislation?

We’re seeking a Senior Advisor to join our Producer Responsibility team to help deliver the Government’s Resources and Waste Strategy.

You’ll collaborate with Environment Agency colleagues, Defra, UK devolved administrations, and industry to implement significant legislative reforms. You can make a tangible difference.

We need someone adaptable, self-motivated, and capable of translating policy into action.

Your responsibilities will include:

1. Working closely with stakeholders across government, industry, and the Environment Agency to influence and implement legislation for workstreams such as Packaging and Deposit Return Scheme, among others.
2. Providing technical advice within the Environment Agency and to industry stakeholders.
3. Driving reforms in waste management to change how waste is managed in England, working with dedicated teams towards common goals. This could involve shaping digital systems for waste management or developing policy.

Our team is dispersed and collaborates with various technical and project teams nationwide. We utilize smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel, though some travel and overnight stays may be necessary.

The Team

You will join our Producer Responsibility Team, which leads on reforming Waste Regulations to ensure the government’s ambitions for resource conservation and waste minimization are achieved.

In Environment & Business (E&B), we foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We leverage evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to enhance delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources.

Experience and Skills Required

Please demonstrate in your answers your ability to:

* Work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, actively encouraging diversity considerations in your work.
* Negotiate outcomes and positively influence colleagues and stakeholders.
* Build trusting and respectful working relationships.
* Make risk-based decisions to achieve optimal outcomes.
* Possess knowledge of environmental legislation, especially waste management laws.
* Drive innovation and make things happen.
* Communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally.

We offer development opportunities and appropriate training to support your growth.

Additional Information

You will have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan. We will assist in finding a role that suits your needs, and training will be provided.

The role is based at an EA Office location with flexible/hybrid working arrangements. Some travel and overnight stays may be required.

Please review the Candidate / Additional Information Pack. For inquiries, contact roger.thomas@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Applications are assessed anonymously based on your competency answers. Interviews will be conducted via MS Teams within two weeks of the closing date.

If you agree to be on a reserve list, your details will be held for six months, and you may be offered an alternative position.

Contract Length: 12 months
