We have exciting plans for growth and are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled NGS laboratory scientist to join the microbiome diagnostics team. You will be the core of the NGS laboratory team, responsible for progressing all microbiome testing samples through the sequencing workflow, including overseeing our technicians' work. You will also be responsible for developing and refining state-of-the-art sequencing protocols. Additionally, you will manage and administer the sequencing laboratory, ensuring processes run reliably and safely.

The role:
* Contribute to microbiome projects by using Illumina sequencing technologies to generate metagenomic and genomic data from various sample types.
* Build and manage a technical team and ensure the smooth operation of laboratory facilities.
* Investigate, develop, and onboard new sequencing workflows and experimental techniques.
* Ensure all equipment is operational by arranging service contracts, repairs, and performing regular maintenance.
* Carry out QC interpretation pre- and post-run and troubleshoot sequencing library preparation and sequencing runs.
* Collaborate with bioinformatic and automation experts in R&D to design novel sample analysis approaches.
* Support training of colleagues in NGS technologies.
* Contribute to developing other microbiome diagnostic products with the R&D team.
Must have:
* Minimum of 5 years lab experience in genomics, genetics, or similar, from a PhD or equivalent industry experience with significant NGS expertise.
* Hands-on experience in microbiome sequencing.
* Experience in lab management, including inventory and personnel management.
* Proven ability to deliver results and troubleshoot effectively.
* Skills in molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation, multiplex PCR, and RT-PCR.
* Excellent communication skills for interpreting and reporting NGS data.
* Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
* Motivation and ambition to contribute to research.
* Attention to detail and good record-keeping aligned with UKAS standards.
* Demonstrated inclusivity and respect for all.
Nice to have:
* Experience with high-throughput automated sequencing workflows.
* Experience training non-specialists and junior colleagues.
* Technical experience with multiple sequencing platforms such as Illumina NextSeq, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio.
* Experience in clinical diagnostics using NGS.
* Skills in maintaining and troubleshooting Illumina sequencing runs.
* Knowledge of standard NGS QC procedures.
