AECOM is seeking an experienced Consultant Aquatic Ecologist to join the Aquatic Ecology Team. The role involves providing technical expertise, performing aquatic surveys, and contributing to environmental assessments and reports for various projects including water companies, renewable energy, and infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Undertake aquatic surveys in freshwater environments
- Collaborate with environmental specialists on projects of varying scale
- Collect and process freshwater macroinvertebrate samples, including potential macrophytes, phytobenthos, fisheries, and water quality samples
- Assist with data entry, analysis, and preparation of survey reports and ecological appraisals
- Deliver high‑quality consultancy and advisory services, prioritizing safety and security
- Contribute to desk studies, literature reviews, and data capture, collation and presentation
- Support the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment documents in line with CIEEM guidelines
Qualifications
- Adaptable and flexible; ability to handle occasional longer or unsociable hours and brief periods away from home
- Experience in aquatic ecology surveys (fish, macroinvertebrates, crayfish, macrophytes, riparian mammals, River Habitat Survey, etc.)
- Degree (BSc, MSc or higher) in a relevant subject with prior experience in aquatic ecology or similar role
- Member of CIEEM or eligible to qualify for this status
- Relevant training, potentially including Water Safety, First Aid and a UK driving licence
- Good knowledge of current environmental legislation, including the Water Framework Directive
