An opportunity has arisen for a Technologist within Laboratory Services, part of the Shotton Technical Department. The role supports the timely, accurate and compliant delivery of laboratory test results in line with product standards, testing requirements and the site environmental permit.
What you will do
Reporting to the Senior Technical Manager, Laboratory Services, the Technologist will provide technical leadership across laboratory equipment, systems and processes. The role works closely with laboratory technicians, the wider Technical function and operational teams across the Shotton site, as well as laboratory and technical teams at other Tata Steel locations where required.
Key responsibilities include:
* Ensuring safe laboratory operations in line with Tata Steel safety values and local targets.
* Line management of 3 – 4 laboratory technicians, ensuring delivery against agreed quality, safety and performance standards.
* Managing internal service agreements and external contracts for equipment calibration, maintenance and servicing.
* Owning laboratory quality systems and documentation, including IMS content and pre-flight checks.
* Stewardship of laboratory IT systems and test data integrity, liaising with Tata IT specialists as required.
* Managing and hosting internal and external audits against relevant ISO standards, ensuring effective close-out of actions.
* Leading the installation and commissioning of new laboratory equipment and systems.
* Providing cover for the Senior Technical Officer, Laboratory Services during periods of absence.
What you will need
Applicants should be able to demonstrate:
* Degree-level education in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
* Proven problem-solving capability within a technical or laboratory environment.
* Strong IT capability and experience working with business or technical systems.
* Knowledge of steelmaking processes through to galvanising and colour coating.
* Good organisational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
* A flexible and proactive approach to work within a small technical team.
