The Smart Grid Development Team is focused on developing practical solutions and engineering policies that support a smarter, more flexible electricity network and help the region move towards net zero.
This is an exciting time to join the energy sector. Distribution networks will play a critical role in decarbonisation, and this role sits right at the centre of that change. As a Smart Grid Development Engineer, you’ll help shape how the network is designed and operated by improving engineering policies, processes and technical approaches that support smart grid delivery.
You’ll work closely with colleagues across the business and the wider industry, helping turn innovation and new ideas into practical, usable solutions.

What you’ll be doing
* Developing engineering policies and supporting guidance that meet regulatory obligations and business commitments
* Taking outputs from innovation projects (both within Northern Powergrid and across other DNOs) and helping embed them into day-to-day engineering practice
* Making sure new and updated policies are clearly communicated and easy for engineers to apply
* Identifying opportunities to deliver better outcomes for customers through smarter, more efficient network solutions
* Developing and delivering technical innovation projectsRepresenting Northern Powergrid at national forums, contributing to the development of industry policy and network design guidance
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for an engineer who is technically strong, curious about the wider industry, and motivated by the challenge of modernising the electricity network.
* You’ll bring strong technical knowledge, alongside a good understanding of how the wider industry is changing, and how the network needs to evolve to support decarbonisation in a smarter and more flexible way.
* Teamwork is essential in this role. You’ll be part of a high performing team, working collaboratively to develop and implement new solutions and power system policy, and playing an active role in leading change.
* Problem-solving is a key part of the job, particularly given the scale and pace of change facing the industry and the level of innovation involved. You’ll be comfortable making decisions, taking ownership, and seeing work through to completion.
* You’ll also be able to deliver high‑quality outputs to agreed deadlines and communicate clearly and confidently. This includes explaining technical concepts effectively to stakeholders across the business and the wider industry, both verbally and in writing.
Skills, knowledge and experience
* HND or degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering
* Several years’ experience in an engineering role
* Good understanding of electrical distribution equipment
* Knowledge of power system design and operation
* Experience using power system design software
* Experience developing engineering policy, standards or specifications
* Completion of a graduate training scheme
