Key Responsibilities:
Research
* Conduct in-depth research for an upcoming exhibition on the four classic novels of Chinese literature (四大名著), which may include but are not limited to the following areas:
History of Ming and Qing Dynasty China
Literary adaptations
Popular culture and media studies
Early diasporic Chinese communities in Singapore
* Conduct research for ad-hoc needs related to other upcoming exhibitions and department needs, such as research on specific artefacts in the client's collections.
Exhibition Development
* Work closely with curators to research and develop written content for exhibitions, including but not limited to exhibition text, child-friendly education guides, and marketing and public outreach materials
* Assist in miscellaneous or ad-hoc tasks, such as sourcing exhibition materials, securing content permissions, scheduling meetings, and note-taking
* Support public programming efforts as part of exhibition-related community engagement and publicity, in consultation with Programmes department
Requirements
* Bachelor/Master Degree in History or related courses in the humanities and social sciences
* High proficiency in the Chinese language (preferably both Simplified and Traditional Chinese), to read Chinese research materials then summarise key points in English where required
* Experience in research and analysis, with the ability to source for primary and secondary materials and meticulously document findings
* Strong English writing skills and ability to adapt writing style to suit different contexts and audiences
* Interest in Singapore and/or Southeast Asia history
* Fluency in spoken Mandarin and/or additional proficiency in reading Traditional or Classical Chinese
* Experience in conducting research on topics related to Chinese history, literature or culture
* Ability to translate text from Chinese to English with good accuracy and writing style
* Experience in exhibitions, library & archives, or museum work
* Proficiency in Southeast Asian languages (e.g. Malay, Thai, Vietnamese)
