Job Summary

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering robust mechanical designs for high‑volume safety‑critical products across the full development lifecycle—from concept, simulation and prototyping through testing, verification, regulatory approval and production handover.


Accountabilities

* Deliver robust, cost‑optimised mechanical designs on time and within budget.
* Work with Project managers to define implementation plans and deliver against them.
* Ensure all designs comply with quality, manufacturing and regulatory standards (including UKCA/CE and EN 54).
* Drive innovation in materials, sustainability and manufacturing processes.


Authorities

* Check and approve mechanical designs, drawings and supporting documentation.
* Design high‑volume plastic injection‑moulded components and small metal fabrications.
* Create innovative mechanical solutions optimised for manufacture, assembly, reliability, sustainability and ease of installation.
* Ensure that existing designs are managed and supported through their lifecycle.
* Perform DFMEAs and drive corrective actions to eliminate risk.
* Prepare detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks.
* Use our PLM system to manage design data, change processes and control configuration management.
* Participate in prototyping activities, engineering evaluations and physical testing.
* Support regulatory and environmental testing with Labs and Compliance teams.
* Collaborate cross‑functionally with Electronics, Compliance, Software, Manufacturing and Programme teams.
* Experience defining mechanical architecture at the system level (interfaces, structure, materials).
* Execute simulations: FEA (static/dynamic), CFD, tolerance analysis, mouldflow or ray‑tracing.
* Familiarity with Model‑Based Definition (MBD).
* Knowledge of digital engineering methods and simulation automation.
* Understanding of modern automated and smart manufacturing technologies.
* Ability to support continuous improvement initiatives and introduce new technologies.

Technical Requirements of the position

* Advocate for Continuous Improvement, actively participating in team or business improvement and supporting team‑oriented activities.
* Ensure concessions or official changes released through the business are managed, implemented timely and records updated; inform and train others where appropriate and control documents via the appropriate teams.
* Communication is essential, inform and escalated issues to key stakeholders, present information and report results clearly, concisely and timely.


Development Responsibilities

* Support development of new fire detection technologies and enhancements to existing designs.
* Ensure continuous professional development to maintain technical competence.
* Engage in design reviews, lessons learned sessions and engineering process improvements.
* Opportunities to contribute to mechanical architecture decisions.
* Potential to mentor junior engineers.
