Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Occupational Therapist to join our established Early Intervention Psychosis Team, based in Walthamstow, East London.

You will be working in an MDT providing specialist Occupational Therapy skills, as well as holding a small generic caseload. The team delivers both 1:1 and groupwork interventions and you will be a large part of that programme. In addition, supervision of junior members of staff such as STR and Peer Support Workers will be required.

We have a good local network of Occupational Therapists both across our other adult mental health, learning disability & children's services and we are also co-located with our physical health services.

Main duties of the job

Foster recovery through empowerment of service users and carers by involving the service user and carer in the planning of their care establishing and maintaining consistent supportive relationships, which encourage increased self-determination and responsibility for service users and their care.

· Offer a range of evidence-based interventions and risk management approaches enabling the service user and carers to reduce and manage symptoms and high-risk behaviour.

Be proactive, innovative and creative in delivering care, enabling the facilitation of service user’s recovery.

Engage service users and carers in relapse prevention and crisis plans, providing intervention that maximizes the service user’s ability to resolve crisis and prevent hospitalization.

Facilitate early discharge from both inpatient and Home Treatment Team by providing regular, formal reviews.

Deliver a flexible and responsive service through practice that is dictated by service users/carers needs.

Work collaboratively and effectively with members of the multi-disciplinary team and in partnership with other agencies.

Deliver high quality care and provide solutions to service users with severe and enduring mental health problems.

Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being
properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters
will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will
undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which
will include mandatory training, systems training and the
allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will
have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior
managers, and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on
engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The
induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period
This post will be subject to a probationary period.

High Cost Area Supplement - Outer London
This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15%of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,714 and a maximum payment of £5,941 - per annum, pro rata for part time

1. To plan, implement and evaluate delivery of care ensuring timely and effective discharge. To include risk management and positive risk taking.
2. To manage a caseload of service users, offering a range of interventions, for a stated limited period. Providing this intervention in venues which best reflects service and service user need.
3. To be involved in the development and delivery of community group programmes, undertaking the development of risk assessments and group protocols in line with the trust policies and procedures.
4. Participating in the implementation of the Care Programme Approach for clients requiring medium term intervention in accordance with CPA Policy.
5. To assess and monitor service user’s mental state, identifying any significant risk factors to support recovery and actively prevent relapse.
6. To apply clinical knowledge and skills to carry out occupational/vocational assessments, one-to-one and group interventions. Underpinned by relevant theoretical and evidence- based approaches.
7. To attend meetings to ensure the needs of the individuals care and families are appropriately met and coordinated. To plan, implement and evaluate the delivery of care in accordance with the Carer’s plan, as required by the Trust and Local Authority policies.
8. To promote the empowerment and education of service users in relation to their holistic health. This focuses on social inclusion, health promotion and relapse prevention.
9. To define and prioritise the needs of service users using needs led, client centred approach.
10. To exercise professional judgement in complex cases and difficult clinical situations.
11. To critically appraise intervention techniques, and clinical decisions.
12. To manage challenging clinical situations.
13. To plan intervention in conjunction with the MDT ensuring regular evaluation of the individuals care/recovery plan.
14. To contribute an Occupational Therapy perspective to multidisciplinary discussions.
15. To critically evaluate effectiveness of therapy interventions, in collaboration with service users, carers and other professionals.
16. To promote and apply equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory interventions that respects the service user’s customs, values and spiritual beliefs.
17. To attend clinical meetings, ward rounds, CPA’s and contribute clinical information on service users’ progress.
