I’m working with a leading organisation in themercial decarbonisation and offsite‑prefabricated energy sector, who deliver innovative mechanical and electrical solutions across the UK, Ireland, and Europe. Due to continued growth, they are seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join their expanding design team at their modern Banbridge facility.
This is a superb opportunity for an experienced engineer to take ownership ofplex mechanical design projects, contribute to industry‑leading low‑carbon solutions, and play a key role in shaping best practice within a highly skilled engineering team.
Your new role
In this senior role, you will lead mechanical design activities from concept through tomissioning, collaborating closely with fabrication, project management andmissioning teams to ensure seamless project delivery. You’ll work across a broad portfolio ofmercial decarbonisation projects, while also supporting junior engineers and helping drive continuous improvement in design processes.
1. Lead the design and delivery of mechanical solutions formercial decarbonisation projects
2. Produce detailed mechanical designs including schematics, calculations, plant selections and project specifications
3. Develop and validate BMS control strategies from initial design through to on‑site optimisation
4. Carry out site surveys, assessments and feasibility studies across the UK
5. Work closely with fabrication teams to ensure designs translate accurately into manufactured solutions
6. Supportmissioning activities, including BMS proofing and optimisation
7. Ensure all work meets health & safety, quality and regulatory requirements
8. Attend internal and external design meetings; liaise professionally with clients, suppliers and contractors
9. Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing and team development
What you'll need to succeed
10. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related discipline
11. Chartered Engineer status (CIBSE or equivalent)
12. Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar mechanical design role
13. Strong experience with LTHW, MTHW and steam heating systems
14. Solid understanding of UK & European design standards and legislation
15. Confidentmunicator with strong organisational and problem‑solving skills
16. Ability to manage your own workload while contributing to wider team objectives
17. Experience with site surveys, energy assessments, audits and service coordination
18. Fluency in written and spoken English
Desirable
19. Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit and BIM 360
20. Experience using IES, Hysopt or similar simulation software
21. Knowledge of decarbonisation strategies and energy‑efficiency measures
22. Hands‑on experience with heat pump technologies (including >1MW systems)
23. Understanding of refrigerants, heat pump optimisation and system design
24. Experience with solar thermal, district heating or large‑scale energy networks
25. Experience in data centre applications (HTG & CHW systems)
26. BREEAM experience and building energy monitoring/verification
