An exciting opportunity has arisen for band 6 Senior Staff nurse within the Cardiovascular Directorate on Doulton Ward.

The Doulton ward team are dynamic and friendly, who are keen to help support and develop nurses interested in experiencing this exciting and changeable environment. If you are an enthusiastic, flexible and passionate cardiovascular surgery nurse then this would be the ideal opportunity for you. As a successful candidate you will have high standards of care, be a positive role model in empowering staff, have experience and a sound knowledge in cardiovascular surgery. Doulton ward takes pre and post cardiac and vascular surgery. There is strong emphasis on the development of the Enhanced Recovery (ERAS) pathway as part of the National guidelines. It consists of 25 inpatient beds caring for patients from Level 1 to Level 2 (ERAS). Applicants must hold the mentorship or equivalent course and have experience in shift management as this role involves shift co-ordination. You will have the opportunity to enhance your existing skills in, mentoring junior staff and colleagues, whilst developing your management and leadership skills for the next step in your career. You will be expected to carry out clinical audits, quality assurance rounds and teaching on the ward. All applicants must have NMC registration and significant experience in cardiovascular surgery. This post will involve internal rotation to night shifts.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the effective and efficient shift coordination, staff professional development and training. It also requires the applicant to be able to work under pressure, willingness to learn, striving to provide exemplary care to service users and their relatives, demonstrate excellent communication skills and empower staff by being a patient advocate. The post holder will work closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and be involved in the updating / development of protocols / guidelines and patient information by having the ability to identify how to improve the service, good problem-solving skills and clinical judgement. The ward has the ability to cardiac monitor / telemetry monitor patients, and all ward staff are expected to be able to recognise and respond to emergency situations. The senior staff nurse will support the ward manager to motivate, develop, support and identify training needs for the ward team. The Senior staff nurse will be supported in development through appraisal, practice development, in house as well as university training to achieve their full potential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Provide strong clinical leadership skills and inspire the nursing team towards a common goal. -Co-coordinating the day to day running of the ward to deliver safe and effective care. - Deal with complaints in a calm and efficient manner and able to explore effective ways of conflict resolution. - To be a role model in delivering safe and effective patient care. - To assess, plan and implement care, provide specialist advice as a patient advocate and maintain associated and accurate records. - To provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in monitoring the planning delivery and evaluation of individualised care. - To identify training and development needs of staff within the area in accordance with local and national policies and work alongside the practice development team. - To act as an advocate for patients within the department, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines. -To ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs and doctrines. -Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and well being of the individuals. Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. BSC/1st degree (Health related)or equivalent qualification /training and experience
2. Mentorship /Teaching Qualification
3. Evidence of professional /clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical,managerial training and CPD

Desirable criteria

4. Cardiac related Degree course or module
5. Work towards a Master's degree
6. Enhanced care pathway trained
7. Leadership course/Qualification

Skills

Essential criteria

8. Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues knowledge of evidence based practice
9. Ability to assess,plan,implement and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients/clients and give relevant advice/information to patients and relatives
10. Evidence of involvement and leadership in teaching and mentoring learners.
11. Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive include dealing with distressed relatives ,care of terminally ill and other challenging situations.

13. RN1/RN2/RN12 or RN Child registered nurse on the NMC register to hold appropriate level for the area of speciality
